I have a couple pairs of 4"+ heels, which I love for their sexy silhouette, but they hurt my feet so much that I mostly avoid them. I have a bunch in the 3" range, which are kind of okay to wear all day as long as I make sure to wear flats to and from work. But I've been wearing flats and low heels a lot more than I used to for the past year or so, cause I'm getting bunions and the tall heels are actually now causing me a lot of pain.
Doesn't mean I won't still put up with it every once in a while if I want to look hot, though...
I can manage a 4" heel pretty comfortably if there's some good padding and support in the shoe. I don't like to wear 4" shoes everyday, but somewhere in the 3-3.5 range is fine. I just feel kinda stumpy in flats since my legs are proportionally shorter than the rest of me.
The highest I go is 3.75, and those require that Mr. Elle is around because I have to hold onto his arm when I walk in them . I do just fine in 3.5 and under, though those that are wedges are easier still.
I absolutely cannot walk distances in any kind of heel. It's not the heel height that does it, it's the lack of structure and padding in the shoes. So for shopping/airports/nights on the town, it's Danskos (which actually have a 1.5 inch heel!) or rubber soled flats.

I can get around in a 3-3.5" heel fine but if there's going to be any bit of substantial walking, it's 2 or under. 3s only work for work or a night out that doesn't involve much walking. I do have a couple of 4" pairs that are super cute and I wear those out, again, when there won't be much walking.
I usually only wear heels at work or in groups because the boy is only a couple of inches taller than me. He loves it when I wear the high heels but it makes me feel like a giant (since I'm already pretty tall) if it's just the two of us. But in a group, I don't mind at all. Weird.
I am happiest in the 1.5-2 inch range. More than two inches and my pants are just way too short. I love flats and wear them frequently b/c they are comfy. I have some gorgeous high heels for events - and I love them - but they all must be 3 inches or under - above that I am not comfy or balanced!
I like 4 inch or 4.5, but will buy 3.5 if the shoe is really cute. I actually have a weird foot thing that makes high heels more comfortable than flats...
ALL of my shoes and boots are at least 3.5". The only flats I own are my Uggs, a pair of sneakers and my gym shoes. I feel comfortable in most of shoes, except my Michael Kors Buckle Platform shoes. I think the heel is 5", they hurt so bad it feels like my feet are going to fall off. I still wear them to the office though, since we basically sit on our butts for 9 hours straight.
3", unfortunatley, i'm very short so would love to be able to wear taller.
