I ordered something for the first time from American Apparel, and I am NOT impressed:

I got this skirt:

I was debating between ordering a medium or a large because I"m usually a size 8 on bottom - but I went with the large.

Well, it arrived today and it is seriously the tiniest skirt I have ever seen. I can't believe this is a large. I almost want to take a picture of it because you guys would NOT believe how small it is. It seriously looks like what any other store would consider an x-small.

Not only that but the material is totally crappy..and I noticed a couple threads that were loose.

Is all of their sizing really super-small like that?

AA sizing is super duper itty bitty. I bought a black long sleeve t-shirt dress from them last summer and I had to get a large (i'm "normally" a small). Plus iirc there stuff isn't pre-shrunk. At the store there were signs saying "Please keep in mind that the garments will shrink 1/2"-1" after washing."

their sizing is ridiculous and inconsistent.  they say they size everything small, since baby rib stretches.  i guess it does, but not without making you seem bloated.

Aw.  That's too bad.  Everything I have from AA is fits well and is well made, and hasn't shrunk.

Too bad, also.  I bought a few items and they have held up really well.

The stuff holds up reasonably well considering the price point (I've owned one of my shirts for 3 years and it still looks fine) but yeah, that skirt sounds TINY.

I think their bottoms run ridiculously small. I remember when shopping for yoga pants last year that I tried on an M. It was so small on me that it was see through. I was a size 2-4 on the bottom at the time. Um...yeah.

Maybe it was just a fluke? I actually ordered a dress as well, but it was back-ordered and so it's shipping in a week or so. I guess I'll see how that goes.

i vote not a fluke. aa stuff is ok for the price, but when i buy something from there, i keep my expectations low. the stuff is made ridiculously small and always shrinks. i get annoyed at having to drip-dry anything i buy from there (which is a small amount due to this).

plus the soon-to-be previous owner is a total choad.  (i think they were bought out?)

Have to say I am not really impressed with AA.  Being in the industry and hearing too many first-hand stories about the owner, Dov, my views of the brand are seriously skewed (but I do like the sweat-shop free part).  Also, knowing the quality and the prices they sell their stuff for is just too much.  However, I haven't really had any problems with their garments.  Sizing does tend to run on the small side, but the few pieces I have all have held up well.  I suggest buying outlet for AA if possible.  There's a lot of good alternatives to basics like AA (james Pearse, Michael Stars, Hardtail, Three Dots, Rebecca Beeson, C&C, Splendid, to name a few).

The other item I had ordered at the same time came today - and the fit was normal.
