I live in Texas and realized recently that any time I attend a catered event - any gathering of more than 20 people, from a house party to an awards ceremony, even weddings - the food served is almost always BBQ. I can count on brisket, sausage, beans, potato salad, and cobbler being on the menu, washed down with a bucket of iced tea. I know BBQ is a "Southern" thing and that it's pretty easy to serve but frankly, I get tired of always having to eat it.
Anyway, my question is this.... Do different regions have their own 'favorite' event meal?

Ugh. I feel you. That's my biggest complaint about events in TX as well. But I suppose it's easy, fairly inexpensive, and you can count on most of the people attending to like it. (Not me - I'm not a beef eater but most.)
Can't help with your question but can definitely feel your pain.
That's interesting. I always think of BBQ is basically summer picnic food.
I'm in Seattle, and I'd say that our most common event food is salmon. It isn't something I usually buy for myself (my freakishly picky DH doesn't eat things that lived in water), so I always enjoy the opportunity to have fish.
I live in Washington State and the last dinner event I went to salmon, baked chicken, and prime rib was served. Sides included green salad, other salads, steamed veggies, wild rice, dinner rolls, and other stuff like this. Barbeque events around here are usually just a summer time informal affair.
I'm from NYC and I also have really only seen barbeque at summer events. A lot of the more informal catered events I've gone to have Italian-American food - lasagna or ziti, chicken parm, etc.. Salmon is also really popular. Cocktail parties always seem to have shrimp, sushi, a cheese spread, spring rolls.
