i'm dying for a chocolate brown room.  our bedroom isn't huge, but would the dark color make it seem really tiny?  i can save the brown room for the guest bedroom.  i stink at this stuff.

I don't think a dark color paint on the walls necessarily makes a room seem small.  There are other factors to consider, too.

Do you have a lot of natural light in your bedroom?  How tall is your ceiling?  What color wood/paint is your furniture?

I agree w/Eurodaisy that the size of your room doesn't matter as much as ceiling height, natural light, etc.

You could always do a main wall (like the wall your bed is on) in chocolate brown and then do the rest of the walls in a lighter mocha color or in a completely different accent color, too.

Honey, didn't we talk about this before... I think you should go for it!  I did my guest bath (translation: very small) dark chocolate brown and it looks fab, I actually think it made it look a little bigger cause the color on the walls recede instead of jump out.  HTH!

I completely agree. I tell people this ALL the time and no one trusts me.

In a smallish room you can also try painting two adjoining walls a big, saturated color and the other two a light to medium neutral such as khaki.

Another option is a chair rail - a horizontal moulding all the way around the room. Paint the bottom part of the wall white, and the top part the dark color. With this look, I'd use the same color on all four walls, since the white will do the trick of keeping the room lightened up.

Or yet another option is a picture moulding at slightly above eye level, where the dark color goes below and the top stays white.

It helps to keep the ceiling and trim bright white, too. The architectural features and details will jump right up and smack you. In a good way.

Just don't fear color (easy for me to say, with 27 wall colors in a 2500 square foot house). Even if you hate it, it's twenty bucks and a few hours on a Saturday to change it. Big whoop.
