So, I dyed my hair a chocolate brown 3 weeks ago and it is already fading to light golden brown. I use biolage and brilliant brunette shampoos, and I wash my hair every other day, and it still fades. I think I want to use a color-depositing shampoo or conditioner to keep it dark -- any recs? I know ArTec is great, but I absolutely cannot handle the smell. So I am open to anything but that. I was thinking maybe Aveda?

I know you said you don't like the way Artec smells but I used a really fragrant conditioner after the shampoo to try to make up for the off odor. It usually worked to mask the smell for me. Just a thought. I don't have any other suggestions on color depositing stuff because Artec is all I use. But Aveda's color generally doesn't last very long so I'm not sure how well the color depositing shampoo/conditioner would work either.
Does the Artec line work well for covering grays? I'm starting to think I should do something about mine, but I don't know if I'm at the point where I feel I need a full on dye job every 6 weeks.
argghhh, OK. But does the shampoo work as well for depositing? Because I thought conditioner was better for depositing. And am I the only one who thinks it smells like burnt hair?
bex - what shade would you suggest?

I don't think it smells like burnt hair but I agree the smell is not the best. I always use my most fragrant conditioner afterwards because the smell is so overpowering. So I'm with you on that one.
I don't know the difference between a color depositing shampoo and conditioner. I only use the shampoo (as do the 2 or 3 friends of mine who use it) and it works well for me. I don't know how well the conditioner works. Sorry I'm not much help!
Artec does an okay job on grey hair. Grey hair is just tougher to dye. I think you almost have to resign yourself to going to the salon more frequently. I think that is what most of my older friends do.
I think the shampoo works better than the conditioner. My hairstylist recommended washing it in and then out immediately. Sometimes I'll let it sit a moment or two longer though. She also recommended shampooing with a regular shampoo immediately after. Color-protecting, of course.
When I wore my hair auburn I used Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner and it made my hair color look AMAZING. It never faded in between treatments and it always looked shiny.
My mom is a stylist and she also said that the Redken Color Extend Highlight Fuel is a great way to treat the hair as well. HTH!

have you tried using Pureology shampoo and conditioner? It's vegan and has zero sulfate, which is the main cause of fading hair color. i think it's available at most beauty supply stores, so see if you can get a sample to try. i just colored my hair and have been using it for the last 2 weeks and love it.
