I thought I was almost done with my xmas shopping when I remembered that I don't have anything for my BF's parents! Normally I would just make cookies or something to bring when I come over to celebrate, but I know that they actually got me a good gift this year (I don't know what it is, but BF says I'll love it), so now I feel like I should probably get them a real present. At first I was going to get an ornament from some well-known artists in my city, but BF says that's a bad idea and they wouldn't really like it.
So now I'm back at square one. They don't have a real definitive decorating style, don't collect anything in particular, and I don't know them well enough to come up with anything exceptionally personal. So: what are some good generic gifts? I feel like I'll probably break down and get a pointsettia, but is that a bad idea? I really don't want to spend more than $20... I know that's cheap, but I'm so poor right now, even that is pushing it for me.

A nice-ish bottle of alcohol is always a good option and can be done for a decent price -- or if they don't drink, then you could get some fancy cooking oils or something like that. You could also get them stuff like CD's or books or dvd's if you could get any suggestions from your boyfriend. Last Christmas, I got my boyfriend's mom a reasonably nice picture frame (but nothing too expensive) and included a cute picture that I had snapped of the boy.
I'd hit up World Market or something like that to put together some sort of gift basket. You could put in some coffee mugs and some hot chocolate/coffee/tea, some gourmet cookies, and maybe fill it in with some cute holiday dish towels and a pretty ornament. I'll bet you could totally do it for about $20.

I'd go this route. If you know that they drink or cook, littlebean's suggestions are nice, but if you don't know hot cocoa is pretty safe.

Yay! I'm excited. Tonight I went out and got a wicker basket, two christmasy mugs, a bunch of little hot chocolate packets in all different flavors, and a sugar ornament (it's edible, but covered in clear plastic so you can hang it on the tree until you want to eat it!)... I'm going to make them some cookies, too
Thanks for the idea!

I am late to this, but I think everyone gav good ideas and I really like what you picked out--it is a surefire but still memorable gift.
jacL - I'm glad you think so! As much as I would love anyone who gave me hot chocolate and cookies, it's nice to get an extra vote because I really like them and want something they'd like, too
