There are so many amazing cities that are just a quick cheap flight or train ride away (London, Paris, Salzburg, St. Petersburg, etc.), but let me recommend Berlin since it is quite close to Denmark. It is a truly fantastic place to visit -- not quite as expensive as some of the other European destinations, full of history and life.

I'll give you a short recap of the main sights in Copenhagen and Denmark. Note that I haven't been to Denmark in may years, and at that time, my priorites were totally diffent than they are now(most interested in amusement parks and candy ), so things might have changed and/or I've missed things.

Things to see in Copenhagen: Amalienborg (the royal palace), Nyhavn (cosy part of the old harbor, lost of restaurants etc), Strøget (shopping), tivoli (amusement park), The little mermaid (famous statue) ++.

Other places to go in Denmark: Odense (the birthplace of the author H.C. Andersen), Århus (city on the mainland of Denmark with a pulsating nightlife), Skagen (the north-west coast of the mainland, known for its beaches and the a unique light that makes it a popular place for painters), visit one of Denmarks many small islands, go on longer bike trips around the country... Since Denmark is a small country, you can reach any place within a few hours on a bus or train.

For more extensive information about Copenhagen and Denmark, I recommend the sites http://www.visitcopenhagen.com and http://www.visitdenmark.com.

When you are in Denmark you should definitely try to visit some other European cities. Since you mentioned Stockholm specifically, I'll say a little about that. Stockholm is a beatiful and great city to visit, and can probably be reached from Copenhagen in a day, either by train or bus, faster by plane. If you just want to go to Sweden, both Göteborg and Malmö (Sweden's 2nd and 3rd largest cities) are much closer to Copenhagen (especially Malmö), and therefore more easily accessible. I haven't been to Malmö, but Göteborg is a very nice city. Or how about a nice ferry trip from Copenhagen to Oslo, Norway?

Kastrup, Copenhagen airport, is one of the main hubs for Scandinavian Airlines, and you can catch flights from here to many destinations in Europe. A low fares airline based in Denmark is Sterling and they too have cheap flights to numerous destinations in Europe. Then, of course, there is the mother of all low fares airlines, Ryanair, that can take you everywhere in Europe. Note that not all destinations with Ryanair can be reached from Denmark. Instead, you'll have to go via London. (Then again, that's not really a problem, is it? ) If you choose to travel with one of the low fares airlines, you should read the travel conditions carefully before you make your purchase, as they don't always provide the same level of service as the "regular" airlines do.

With some planning (the cheap tickets are sold out first, so you need to plan ahead), or if you have the possibility to travel on "weird" times/days of week, you should be able to cover a lot of Europe during your stay in Denmark.

Again, hope this was helpful. Have a wonderful time!

I would def check out Amsterdam. I went with my Dad and my brother and I loved it. It was very cool.

You can fly almost anywhere in Europe cheaply - check out RyanAir and EasyJet. There are other lowcost airlines as well.

Just a few other cities I'd rec: Dublin, Paris, Monaco (It's pricey, but you can take a day trip there I think, if you're in southern France), Barcelona. My roommate went to Stockholm and Berlin and loved those. I've always wanted to go to Russia, so I would say get there if you can (I'll be jealous!).

Take lots of pictures, and have a great time!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but Norwegian - could you tell me something about Tromso? I got an offer to spend a year there, and am wondering whether it will be fabulous or make me really, really miserable. I have never been there, though I've spent some time in Norway and Iceland.

Chloe - I have been to Scandinavia and would warmly recommend visiting Norway - it is enchanting! I stayed in Bergen for a while and went on day trips by boat. If you are interested in seeing architecture, amazing art, and want to be exposed to a different kind of life, I warmly recommend St. Petersburg. If you decide on St.Petersburg, let me know and I will be able to give you further leads. It is relatively easy to get around Europe these days... Another amazing place to visit is the Czech Republic.
