Good Tomato Based Pasta Sauce?
Permalink Closed

I've changed the menu for my dinner party (yet again) and now I'm going with Italian-esque. (The pork loin recipe I posted earlier turned out really well but it was too much for my non meat-eating self.) Soooo... I'm making a greek salad, a pasta dish, and the dc's bruschetta recipe: http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=44784&p=3&topicID=5392168&topicPage=9

Here's where I need help: greek salad dressing - any good bottled versions out there?

Pasta sauce: same question - good bottled sauces? I usually just use an organic bottled spaghetti sauce of some kind for my pasta at home but they're never really that good. My pasta is rigatoni and Italian sausages. Any idea what to use for a pasta sauce? I'd prefer a bottled variety for eases sake but I'm open to a homemade version instead that I can make ahead of time or doctoring up a bottled version (adding garlic, onions, whatever). Any good recipes you girls have or bottled varieties you've tried?

I really like Newman's Own Fat Free Ceaser on Greek Salad.

I usually buy Classico sauce and doctor it up with some crushed red peppers and a splash of red wine.

I really like Paul Newman's pasta sauces. His tomato and roastic garlic sauce is especially good.

Where is Kraft Feta and Oregano dressing? Is it with the regular pasta sauces?

I'm having a pasta night tomorrow with a couple of friends who can't make it to the dinner and we're going to taste test both the Classico and Paul Newman's. I'll pick up some Kraft on the way home (and any others recommended) if I can figure out where to buy it. Fun! I'll report back our findings.

I like Barilla.  It's my favorite store brand.

This Vodka sauce it so yummy and SUPER easy too if you want to try to make some sauce:

Penne alla Vodka

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup vodka
  • 1 pound penne pasta
  • 1 pint heavy cream

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook garlic in olive oil until tender, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, breaking up a bit with fork. Stir in basil, salt and pepper and simmer 15 minutes. Stir in vodka and cook 15 minutes more.
  2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente; drain.
  3. Stir cream into sauce and cook 10 minutes more. Toss with hot pasta.

I might be too late on this one, but if you have a Trader Joe's nearby, they also have some delicious pasta sauces.

Oh - my bad! Sorry, I wasn't reading it correctly. I'll pick some of that up - thanks!

Jacks435 - no Trader Joe's nearby, unfortunately. I love that store.

Cricket - sounds delish but I can't have the cream in it. There's a guest who's allergic to milk (to put it simply). Do you think it would work without it?

Yep! This one is it. It's super good. I had a friend over and we tried several different sauces and this one was by far the best. I think I only have to add some onions (maybe some peppers) and nothing else. It's got plenty of garlic. It's super tasty. Can't wait for everyone else's reaction!
