So sometime last week, I ordered a sweater and a t-shirt from Madewell. I told the man on the telephone, XL. I was assuming that they carried that size since J.Crew does too. The man on the phone told me that if they didn't have the items I want in stock at one of their stores, they would email me. About 15 minutes after I placed my order, I got an email saying that they didn't have the sweater I wanted in pink, so I emailed back and said I'd like the purple in an XL. I didn't hear back from them, so I assumed that they had it in stock. About two days ago, I received a shipping confirmation, saying that they will be sending the purple in size large, as I requested, and also that the t-shirt I ordered was not available in a size L.
Did the man on the phone think when I said XL that I meant L? I think he should have told me that they don't carry XL (which I'm assuming they don't). Luckily, the sweater fit, but I was pretty disappointed in the whole experience. Not to mention that the t-shirt I wanted was available in another color, so I don't know why they didn't email me asking if I would like to order that color.
I was very frustrated by the whole process, so I'd warn anyone thinking of ordering from them online. I'm wondering if I do want to order from them again if I could just call one of the two stores and have them do a charge send? It seems like that would make more sense, since they'd be able to tell me right away if something's in stock.
I would have no problem shopping in a B&M store - this review is for their online/phone ordering only. If I could give it a sideways thumb, I would.

that's so weird that he just took your order without mentioning that the size didn't even exist!!!! Good think it worked out and fit, but if not I'd be really frustrated!

Yeah, good thing it fit! I would have been so pissed off if I had had to pay another $9 to ship it back.
On a side note, I'm pretty dissappointed in the quality of the sweater. It's kind of stretched out in the arms, so that you can see my arms through it, even though it isn't too tight in the arm area, if that makes sense. Plus, it just seems like something I could buy at Old Navy or Gap. I was expecting it to be nicer, since it's a sister company of J.Crew. I don't think I would buy anything there again unless I see it in person.
