Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe Split

Reese and Ryan splitReese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have separated. The couple's rep released a statement to TMZ Monday morning that says "We are saddened to announce that Reese & Ryan have decided to formally separate. They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time."

Sources tell TMZ Witherspoon has contacted celebrity divorce lawyer Robert Kaufman, who has represented Jennifer Aniston, Roseanne and Lisa Marie Presley.

Sources say Witherspoon spoke with Kaufman about divorcing Ryan Phillippe, her husband of seven years. The couple has two children. They met at Witherspoon's 21st birthday party.

As for why Witherspoon contacted Kaufman, we're told it was not triggered by one event. Rather, one connected source says it was "cumulative."

Divorce papers have not yet been filed.

Aww thats sad to hear.  They seemed so cute in public and I loved how they acted when she won the Oscar.  Guess it happens though.

my thoughts exactly.  for some reason though they both give off this difficult to deal with vibe so I could see them splitting up eventually.

this makes me sad too, even though i always thought he gave off a jerk vibe. it's funny -- today i read his interview in "interview" magazine and he mentioned a few times how hard it was to be away from his children when he was working, but nothing about missing reese.

This one does not suprise me.  Actually I was expecting it for some reason.  They just seemed so distant lately, and even seemed to answer some questions akwardly.


It does make me sad though because of the kids...at least Jen and Brad didn't have kids.

yea, i'm no insider, but i always heard murmurs of bad things about their relationship- so i guess i'm impressed they lasted this long.  They seemed connected only through their kids.

Hmmm...I'm not too surprised.  I think I've read interviews with Reese that indicated that they had some hard times.  At least they sought counseling and tried to work things out.  With a lot of celebrity couple splits, it seems like they give up really easily.

I heard a rumor on the radio that their marriage was to boost eachothers careers.  Also whatever Ryan's movie he is in he is supposedly up for an Oscar or something and now with the split, his chances have lowered because everyone will side with Reese.  Not sure how truthful this is.
