Nicole Richie seeks medical help for thinness She has checked into a treatment facility to address inability to gain weight Reuters
LOS ANGELES - Socialite Nicole Richie, whose rail-thin appearance in recent photos has stoked tabloid speculation of an eating disorder, has checked into a treatment facility to address her inability to gain weight, her publicist said Thursday.
“She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition,” spokeswoman Nicole Perna said in a statement. “It is important to Nicole that she achieves this goal in a healthy way as this is not a treatment for an eating disorder.”
Richie, the 25-year-old daughter of singer Lionel Richie, has publicly acknowledged her obvious loss of weight in recent months, telling Vanity Fair magazine: “I know I’m too thin right now. ... I’m not happy with the way I look.”
And she told People magazine that “stress” over the breakup with her former fiance had briefly affected her eating habits. But she has vehemently denied as “rumor” media reports suggesting she suffered from an eating disorder.
Her admission to the unidentified facility has forced a delay in production of the latest installment of her popular TV reality show, “A Simple Life,” producers said.
Postponement of the show came weeks after Richie and her ”Simple Life” co-star, hotel heiress Paris Hilton, ended a feud that had kept the two on nonspeaking terms for over a year.
“We wish her a speedy recovery and fully expect the series will resume production at some point, hopefully in the near future,” said Chris Alexander, a spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television.
Alexander said the upcoming fifth installment of “A Simple Life,” in which the pampered pair will be shown working as camp counselors, had been slated to begin in early November and air sometime in 2007.
The show moved to the E! after ending a three-year run on the Fox broadcast network, where it debuted as a hit in 2003 starring Hilton and Richie mixing with common folk as they worked real jobs in America’s heartland.
The show continued into a fourth season even after a highly publicized, but unexplained, rift developed between the two stars.
The show’s executive producer, John Murray, has said their reconciliation earlier this month was inspired in part by a mutual dislike of the proposed concept for the show’s upcoming fifth season, which originally was to have been shot on a desert island, Alexander said.
News of Richie’s decision to seek medical help first surfaced on the cable network that airs her show, E! Entertainment Television, and its Internet outlet, E! Online.
I think it's sad they feel the need to put this sort of spin on it. I mean, seriously, does anyone really buy that? I just think it sends the wrong message to people that suffer from eating disorders. Whether she wants it or not, young girls look up to her and I just think that this sends the message to young girls that eating disorders are shameful and we should pretend like they don't exist. Coming clean would have been the more responsible thing to do.
Actually I went through the same thing about 4 years ago. I was 90 pounds and I constantly ate...I could not gain weight. I was passing out all of the time and people thought that I had an eating disocrder. Luckliy my bf knew the truth or it would have been even worse.
I underwent a lot of medical testing because of it. In the end it was a combination of things that made me so thin in the first place and the fact that the stressors were constant in my life I was unable to gain any back. I had to make some major life changes to get back to a healthy weight so I sympathize with her.

I'm actually w/Farrah...I went through something similar about 5 years ago. I was going through a really hard time and a lot of stress. I lost quite a bit of weight and could not put it back on. I looked aneroxic. I went to the doctor and they did tests on me too. I ended up having to drink Ensure (like old people) drink just to put weight on.
So I sympathize w/her too...she honestly might not have an eating disorder.
See, the whole "inability to gain weight" thing would have a little more credibility if she had always been like this. But if you look back to when she first started gaining exposure on the Simple Life, she was a lot heavier, so it's hard for me to believe that she's trying that hard to gain weight.

That doesn't matter. I went from 130 pounds to 90 in less than 3 months. Previous weight has nothing to do with it. It can happen to anyone.
I realize that it may be hard for someone to grasp if you or someone you know/love has never been in the same situation, but it is definitely a real problem. According to my doctor I had a mild case of it. I went from 130 to 90...I can only imagine what happens to someone with a severe case of this - it is very scary.

yea it could go either way...though i think Lionel Ritchie did make that quote where he said Nicole didn't eat when she was stressed. I know when I was stressed, I lost a lot of weight, but it was because I wasn't eating much. Regardless of the reason she can't gain weight NOW, i do think its possible she originally got to this weight by starving herself and/or overexercising.
