Retail to Corporate
Permalink Closed

Hey everyone! Well now that my wedding has been over for a while now it is time to get back to work! I would love suggestions from any girls out there that have retail backgrounds that went into the corporate world. I worked in retail for 11+ years and did some management work. I am interested in working probably in something customer service/health care/HR related. I am having a really hard time with my resume, since I have never written one that is geared towards what I call the outside world. Any tips, advice? Good websites to check out? TIA!

I went from retail to corporate (but I went to marketing/graphic design, which really wasn't related). However, if you are looking to get into HR or customer service, I would highlight those on your resume. I'm assuming that if you worked in retail management you had some involvement in the store's hiring and training process. Maybe you even implemented your own training ideas. And of course, we all know that retail is heavy on the customer service end, so I would highlight those experieneces as well.

That's all I've got. Sorry I'm not much more help than that.

I think Kenzie made a good point.  its all about highlighting certain things on your resume that fit the job.  I didn't understand for the longest time what needed to be put on a resume and what didn't so I would put everything and that worked to my disadvantage a few times in interviews because we would focus on items that didn't fit the job.  I definetly think elaborating on your customer service skills and employee trainings would be good for an HR type job.

When I was interviewing for my current job my first job I held for 5 years (at a batting cage/entertainment type place) had some really good experiences I could turn into teamwork/leadership qualities so I turned directing summer camps of kids into directing large groups of 60+ people on such and such.  Who cares if they were kids or adults.  The point was I effectively did it and it was relevant.  Same with managing staff - staff consisted of 1 - 2 people since there was a grand total of like 4 or 5 employees including me and the boss but you get the point.  focus on what will work for the job.
