I just inherited a super-cool tablet PC (like a mini-laptop), and it's awesome. I am currently, er, "borrowing" a neighbor's wireless-internet connection. I have 2 questions:
1. Since it's an unsecured network, I should avoid doing things like banking, purchasing, etc. on it, right?
2. I can't figure out why the connection seems to shut itself off every 10 minutes or so. It's not the signal strength, because when I bring my work laptop home, it doesn't have that problem. It also keeps giving me a warning that my "local area connection" is unplugged, but I am not using a LAN.
Any thoughts? I do plan to get my own router soon, but wanted to check in the meantime.

#1. Yeah I'd avoid personal information for the moment since its unsecure unless you have a firewall on the tablet pc but I'm not sure if that would protect you.
#2. I'm unsure about that but I find that every now and then my lap top will do the same with the shutting off and reconnecting every now and then. I get the LAN message too probably because I use it at work and not at home. Anyways I think you are ok on this one.
The lan message is always on ,but it doesn't mean anything. I'm sure you could delete the box if you go to internet connections, since you aren't using that at home & it would go away. Secondly, yeah...you are borrowing someone's network & that's probably why it shuts off. I have wireless...I can see other people's networks, but can't get in them (don't need to, have m my own anyway) because I have a firewall (2 of them). My boyfriend can jack the neighbor's @ my house, but the signal strength is low. He does it as his house, and can use for a while, but it dies. The person's network you are "borrowing" is not secured. If they throw a password up, you won't be able to access it anymore. It's really not a good idea to do this. Anything you do shows up under their ISP. I know you aren't some creepy person, but that is what happens when you are using their network connection. I'm not new...to this forum..I deleted my old one, because I didn't like the name and put up a new one. I have to start posting like crazy again:)

Not to hijack, but my own personal wireless is unsecured. How do I put up a password?

Are you sure? Do you have a WEP key that you entered when you set it up? 64 bit is outdated, but 128 is more secure...but can be hacked. If possible, this probably is an okay choice for now--The highest level of security is via WPA2.
What's your wireless through? I have Qwest MSN High Speed DSL. And when I set up it up, they gave me a WEP key to enter...I have 2 firewalls. One with them, and one of my own.
