Emergency Contraception (Plan B) may go over the counter!

Plan B (emergency contraception) might go over the counter really really soon. The FDA's acting commisioner has met with the pharma company who manufacture Plan B and a deal might be coming within weeks. Plan B would only be sold in stores that have a pharamcy, and would only be available through a pharamcist and only by individuals over 18 but this is so exciting! There are a few govermental snags to work out, and it would actually be more expensive than when bought with a prescription but who cares? Women could go and get it for themselves! Can you tell I'm so excited about this?

I would be happy about this but I guess I'll believe it when I see it. In a time when certain pharmacies don't even carry it when it is a prescribed medication I have a hard time believing that you could go get it OTC at any corner drug store......

"moving toward" changing their view on it & actually changing it are 2 entirely different things.

We actually do have EC OTC in Washington State. However, we're pretty thorough;y blue. I'm also very excited for this. There's no reason not to because it's not as if the doctor actually examines you to make sure you've had unprotected sex so there's really no need for the middle man.

Wal-Mart has actually changed thier minds about emergency contraception. Back in March when Massachusetts and Illinois state laws forced Wal-Mart to carry the prescription drug, the powers-that-be in the company decided that it wouldn't be a smart business move if they were the only pharmacy not carrying it. I don't know what's happened with that since, if anybody in any state can go to a Wal-Mart with a prescription and get the EC, but it was "supposed" to happen. So, I guess that Wal-Mart might also allow OTC selling of EC.

(I'm assuming that you were referring to Wal-Mart, and that this business decision by them takes care of remaining pharmacies that won't carry it. However, there might still be a few smaller hold-outs, but this was the big one.)

I'll be sooo happy when this happens. I can finally stop the cycle of boycotting Target and then feeling guilty when I shop there anyway. My guilt complex won't know what to do with itself!
