Installing a new bathtub...new bathroom to follow
Permalink Closed

So, this weekend my husband will be removing out current bathtub and the surround and replacing it with a nice new white one. The area around the old almond colored one wasn't looking so good, so it's time. We went with a nice brite white fiberglass one. Unfortunetly, our neighbor can't support a fancily remade bathroom. We'd never get the money out when we sell. So.... But, we will be doing another element of the bathroom every weekend until it is finished.

The big question is, what colors do I use in my new space? It will have white cabinetry and white fixtures, and all metal elements will be satin nickel.

I'm leaning towards a medium baby blue with brown. What do you think? I would love to do the blue on the walls (a little darker than 'baby', sort of the popular blue that boys wear. I refer to it as French blue...) and a brown with blue shower curtain.

Comments, suggestions?

You said you are going to be selling your home?  I'd stick to light shades of paint.  Blue and brown are lovely together.  I don't know if I would go dark with the blue, you can see many paint colors on sample bathrooms on many paint websites like http://www.benjaminmoore.com and http://www.sherwin-williams.com Easier to visualize then you know exactly what shade of color to get!

You sound like us!  We're doing the same thing right now, only we're still in the "ripping-old-tile-out" phase, which seems to be taking FOREVER.  Once we really get started, we'll be doing it piecemeal too, since it'd be a fortune to try and do it all at once.

Anyway, I think blue and brown is a gorgeous color combination and probably wouldn't be too dark if you threw some white in there as well.  Does your bathroom have any natural light?  If not, then it might end up too dark and you might want to lighten up the paint by just a shade in that case.  Our bathroom has no natural light, so I've put in white towels, a white bathmat, and painted the vanity white to offset the lavender walls that I painted.  (We have granite as the tile in the shower, on top of the vanity, and on the floor, so it looks like a friggin' cave in there.  I'll be so glad to get rid of it!)

Oh, take plenty of before and after pics!  Since we're doing the same thing, I'd love to see what you all are doing!

Their is a window that faces North and gets plenty of morning light (I have to duck around the beams as they shine into my mirror and make morning make up application a workout). All the fixtures will be bright white, as well as the door (it's the tiniest bathroom ever!) so I don't think it will be too dark, but I may have to lighten the paint. I have a color in my head, but I can't describe it.

We won't be selling for another 3 years (our plan was to live her 3-5. We've been here 2 and it's gonna take five to get rid of this place. The market sucks in MI).

I'll take some photos and I'll look for yours too.

When you say french blue are you talking about this shade:

Donald J. Trump Signature Collection

or more like this:

Cause I would do the lighter one.  I think the combo will be very pretty, be sure to post pics.

The first color didn't show up, but a shade lighter than the blue in the polo shirt. I don't want it to be a true 'baby' blue, but I want a true shade of blue that isn't too pastel but isn't much darker either. I tried to post a paint chip from the web and it wouldn't take.

This is the shower curtain that I ordered from Target online. I will get it in a week. Hopefully it is nice! I hate ordereing stuff online because so often it doesn't come as true to color as one hopes.

Mystic Shower Curtain

I want to bring out this blue, but I'm a little fearful of painting the bathroom walls this color. I may just have to accesorize the hell out of it in blue. The bathroom is pretty bright, so I know it won't be too dark in there with the brown.

I'm trying to go modern and masculine without making it into a plce that's too manly. Poor hubby deserves some space that is a little masculine, our bedroom is purple for goodness sake!

Love that shower curtain!  I agree about the brown not being too dark, I recently painted my guest bathroom chocolate brown and it isn't too dark at all (and it's a small room).  Although here's an idea, how about painting the top half the blue color and the bottom brown, make sense?  Or maybe one wall blue and the rest brown.

Oooh. I could get on board with that. The two tones walls.

Where the big mirror over the sink is now, I want to replace it with two large oval medicine cabinets. That way I can increase the storage (as I mentioned, smallest master bath ever). So, that will make it a focal wall, being a little different. I could make that wall behind the mirrors all blue and then do a blue on top, brown on bottom split. Maybe the bottom I could do in beadboard. Then on top of that would be some moulding like a chair rail in white, and blue above. Could I do a more flat brown and a slightly more glossy blue on top?

I am a little afraid that dividing the wall in two like that might magnify the smallness of the room. Maybe I could make the wall you see when you walk in brown and the rest blue. The blue must be behind the mirrors so that it's lighter there when the lights reflect so I can apply make up easily.

I'm going to kick your idea around.

Keep the ideas coming!

If you spray hairspray or anything in there, I would do a satin.

Maybe could you post a pic of the room and we could give you feedback on what walls to paint what color, etc?

So, these photos were taken during our home inspection, before we bought the place, so needless to say this isn't my junk and I haven't been living with it like this. I did fix it up the best I could for the short term. But, above you have witnessed one of the ugliest and smallest "master" baths around.

You can't see the toilet, but it's in fornt of the window, and directly in front of the door.

The bathtub/shower area will be bright white in about 2-3 more hours. This is the longest project ever. I'm dirty and cranky, but I can not wait to have a new tub!

I've been brainstorming, and am contemplating painting blue, and then painting brown at the top of the wall, and on the ceiling near the corner, so it makes a "border" that's folded into the corner. We'll see.I did just cruise out to BBB and looked at their bathroom accessories. I bought a curved shower rod.

hope these ugly photos help with the brainstorming!

I'm not sure what you mean, but one thing to consider is that if you have all the walls blue and then do chocolate at the top, the dark color will bring the ceiling down and may make it feel smaller.  I think what I would do if that was my bath is to paint the wall with the mirrors on it blue and the rest brown.  Or the wall with the mirrors brown/blue vertical stripes and the rest brown.  Oh, and don't feel bad about having such a small master bath, mines about the same size and my door opens right up to the beautiful toilet too   Can't wait to see the finished product.

Hmm. Good point about it lowering the ceiling, visually. I'll keep brainstorming. Meanwhile, I just washed  my hair in the sink becuase it's Monday morning and the instal isn't done. Hopefully tonight. Cross fingers!

Ok. The shower curtain arrived and the quality is abysmal. I am returning it. So back to the drawing board. I am open to all color suggestions, but am leaning towards a cooler pallette. If you find a curtain, please post!

Also, today, Friday, the tub part is in, but the shower walls are not. I am still imposing on friends/family for the use of their shower. Hopefully by Sunday this will be done.
