Laminate vs. Hardwood flooring
Permalink Closed

I will most likely be moving in the fall and would like to rent out my condo.  Since the carpet has stains on it, I decided I should go ahead and get new flooring - either hardwood or laminate (such as pergo).  I can't decide which one to go with...I'd be willing to shell out the extra money for hardwood if I knew it wouldn't require significant maintenance/care since I won't be there to do it.  What do you think, for a rental, is hardwood or laminate better?

get a good-quality laminate! I have hardwood floors, and they are beautiful, but they scratch easily, especially with the dogs. My dad has Pergo and his looks fantastic even after several years of wear. HTH!

If you're planning to rent it out, I say go with pergo. It shows less wear and tear and will hold up better than hardwood.

Since your renting it out and not living in it yourself, go for laminate.

I have no idea what they put in my kitchen at my apt but it is already bucking and coming up in spots and I've lived here for less than a year.  I think its laminate but I'm not 100% sure.  I know its not real wood.

Also I had no idea you couldn't use Mr. Clean and water on it like with tile floors (my cousin showed me what she uses on hers so I could use the right thing) so make sure to tell your renters not to do that because it will also cause bucking and damage.  Luckily I was caught after only my second time of doing it.

Hmm... if laminate has special cleaning requirements, I'd go with the hardwood.  A renter may accidentally use the wrong product and cause some damage (despite your warnings), and hardwood is durable as hell.  If it get scuffed or stained, you can have it resanded and resealed, and then it looks good as new.  Plus, if you ever decide to sell your condo, it is a real investment that will majorly boost the home's value.
