So DH and I are taking the VA bar at the end of July, and are going to Amsterdam the first week in August for our post-bar trip.  (Lots of folks who have just graduated from law school do this --- i.e., wait until after the bar exam but before the start of their next job to go to Europe or some such big vacation to celebrate.)  I've been once before but only for about 24 hours and did the most basic things (Van Gogh museum, a coffeeshop, some shopping).  We'll also be visiting a friend from college while we're there (he's getting a Masters).

So, has anyone been there lately?  I'm having a bear of a time with the hotel situation... got about 7 reservations at various places but don't know which one to choose.

Also, I'm pretty sure we'll go to a club at least once.  Any ideas for what I should wear?

I went about 7 years ago. I would go to the Anne Frank house if I were you. I only remember seeing that and the canals (and some nasty things in store fronts along the way! ) Anyhow, I'm not much help but I do remember that was worth seeing.

yeah, the Ann Frank house is definately a must-see.

we stayed at a hotel across from the sofitel about a 15 minute walk from the train station. I can't for the life of me remeber what it was called right now, but it was nice. Don't know how helpful that is though.

For clubbing, definately fashionable dress. Amsetrdam is one of the best dressed cities I've been to (I swear everyoen there was dro dead gorgeous).

Oh, and they have these little potato ball things with paprika. Can't remember what they're called but you should be able to figure it out from the menu. Get them. They are awesome.

I'm jealous- I Amsterdam!

This year is the 400th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth so there are special events and exhibitions going on. The main museum (Rijksmuseum) has been closed for renovations but they are having a number of Rembrandt shows throughout the year.

My friend and I visted Amsterdam last year. Because we were backbacking around europe we only stayed in Amsterdam for 2 days 1 night which was def. not enough. I would def. go back sometime in the future. We stayed in a hostel which I loved doing. We stayed in what was once a pirate ship or so that was what we were told by the owner. It was a different experience in the best way possible. Anyway, the Van Gogh museum and Anne frank house is a must see. There are canals all over, you could take one of those canal boat tours. Its really beautiful. You can walk around the red light district. Theres also the Heinken Brewry museum. You get free beer and a mug. Thats all I can recall. Have fun and pelase let tell us about your expereince when you get back!

I third or fourth the Anne Frank house.

I also went to the "torture museum" or something like that. It was... umm... interesting. All sorts of ancient devices used to torture/kill people.

And I don't know if you get Lucky Magazine, but in the new issue (August?) it has a shopping guide for Amsterdam.

I saw that and literally yelped with excitement (my DH thought something was wrong)!

Thanks for the advice, all... sounds like we should definitely check out the Anne Frank house.  I can't wait for this trip!

And if anyone else sees this in the next three weeks, keep the tips comin'.
