Cingular vs. Verizon
Permalink Closed

Does anyone have Cingular or Verizon cell phone service? (esp if you live in the Twin Cities). I just got back from studying abroad and need a new phone. I really wanted the pink Motorolz Razr, which is through Cingular, but I read some terrible reviews of the Cingular service in the TC - dropped calls, poor reception. I see that Verizon offers a light pink Razr, but the reviews for Verizon in the cities were quite old. Does anyone have either Verizon or Cingular? How is the service - dropped calls, reception, clarity, etc. Cingular claims they have the least amount of dropped calls, but I find that hard to believe. Thanks!

I am one of the only people at my job with Verizon (I work in Hollywood). Most of my co-workers have T-Mobile and Cingular. I'm also one of the few who never complain about reception in the interior offices. Verizon is more expensive, but the coverage area is unparalleled. I've gone through loads of boonies with my phone and have rarely lost service. I also rarely ever have dropped calls/bad service. Usually if I have to deal with bad reception/dropped calls it's because the other person has a different service.

I have the pink Razr too and while it's not been a perfect phone, I still it. It froze on Sunday but I just had to get the new software for the phone and everything was fine again.

There are places where Cingular actually works better than Verizon, but they are few and far between. One of my good friends has had both companies and is one of the only people I know who prefers Cingular.

I have had Cingular for 5 years now and have been much happier with the service recently than when I first got it. I remember getting dropped calls all the time at first, and then all of a sudden 2 years ago I noticed the reception was much much better, and it works great everywhere I go now. Oh, and I get to upgrade my phone free of charge every 2 years with Cingular (well, not totally free since I have to pay the $15 or so upgrade fee, but the phone is free) and I know my boss had Verizon previously and switched because they wouldn't upgrade her phone for cheaper or for free. She said since they wouldn't reward loyal customers she wasn't going to stay with them.

I have had a pink Razr thru Cingular since February and I'm not happy.  I live in Chicago and the service/reception is terrible.  A couple weeks ago, my phone got to the point where I couldn't even talk on it because it was dropping calls and I couldn't hear anyone on it.   The day I went to go into Cingular to complain, my razr magically started working better.  If I wasn't in love w/the pink Razr, I'd probably go back to Sprint, but I can't bare to part w/her!

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't know picking a cell phone service would be this difficult. I think I may go with Cingular, they have a 30 day thing where if you're unhappy you can return the phone (in like-new condition... aka probably impossible!) and they'll waive the early termination fee. I'll have to make a trip to the cities, as I'm at home in WI for the summer. If Cingular really does suck, I'll make the switch to Verizon. Thanks for the advice!

I had cingular and i switched to verizon.  I am much happier with verizon than I ever was with cingular.  my family is now switching over to verizon because they have had tons of issues with cingular and I haven't had any with Verizon.

I am in Houston and haven't had a problem here nor while traveling in Orlando or detroit.  When I had cingular I had issues both in Houston and Chicago.  If I were you I'd listen to the reviews and go with Verizon and get their pink razor phone.  I've seen it irl and its nice.  I don't find verizon to be any worse than cingular price wise.  I think when I was comparing cingular was more expensive than verizon for what I wanted.

I live in Madison, WI right now and I just switched from T-mobile to Verizon and I am so happy I did.  Verizon's reception is sooo much better.  I almost never have dropped calls, and I have reception everywhere, which is good since I work in a very small town a hour outside of Madison.  I really wanted the Razr, but many of the Verizon reps said while it was a good looking phone, they wouldn't really recommend it if you are worried about reception, battery life, etc.

My older brother and sister-in-law live in the TC, and they have Cingular and like it, so my Dad told me I should just go with that. I went to Best Buy yesterday, got it all set up, and now I'm regretting going for Cingular. I've made a few calls and so far, the reception has onlbeen good on two out of the four calls I've made, with one of them being super-quiet to the point that I could hardly hear the person on the other end and they couldn't hear me well, and the other my friend was cutting out. I think I may be taking advantage of Cingular's 30 day policy and going for Verizon or Sprint, which I've already had. This is the last time I pick something just for the phone/color. I did that with my iPod, got a pink iPod mini, and then wished I had just gotten the regular iPod, which held more songs. Anyways, next time I will be listening to you girls!

Definetly give verizon a chance before you go with sprint.  I only hear complaints about sprint and never anything good.  Not sure what your experience has been with them in the past though but lately the complaint is too many people on their network and not enough room for it (not sure the correct lingo).
