help - I am soo freaking out it's not even funny!!!
Permalink Closed

I'll try to make sense, I really am freaking out (as in, my hands are shaking).

Well, met this guy during my work-trips to another university. Very nice person, we had dinner together a couple of times, and exchanged e-mail addresses - he said when he goes hiking he'll let me know, may be I can go with him. And I promised to write to him as soon as I'd find out something work-related. I think I really like this guy...

Well, since I am an obsesive compulsive stalker (now usually, but that's how I feel now), I went to the web-site of his school and found his web-page. Then, we kept talking for those last months.

Today I went on his web-site to find out what he was up to, since I haven't heard from him for the last... ??? 4 days? (told you I was obsessive-compulsive!), and found out there is a little link there with the statistics.

Meaning: those last 2 months he was able to see when I was checking his web-page (I guess I am the only person he knows in my city who works in the university, and probably he could check even the department - almost like having my name written right there! -ico checked you 4 times such day). I freaked out so much I took the web cable and unplugged it - as if this could change something at this point.

Man, what do I do? BTW, the day he had most visits was the day when me and my friend in Boston were discussing about the pics of a girl on his web-site (he didn't mention he had a gf, and I have no idea whom this girl is). What a coincidence, right?

ok, I feel like I f***ed up any chance with this guy. I didn't really want him to think I was an obsessive-compulsive stalker, but I guess that's what I am.

AAAhhH. Just wanna scream! I have to find a way to calm down before I have to go to work!!!

what do you girls think? What should I do now? Pretend like nothing and stop checking the web-site? Forget about the guy?

I just really wanna scream.

OMG - LOL! you poor thing!!! it sounds so Briget Jones!

well, don't visit it again... that's all I can tell you. and please do not die of embarrassment.  if he asks about it, tell him you found out your "visits" were visible and are so embarrassed - just fess up and tell him you have a crush on him and sorry for visiting his site so much - and say nothing more...

omg! it's ok! poor ico!!!

lmao!!! I'm sorry sweetie! I wouldn't worry about it. Obviously, if he saw it didn't bother him since he kept talking to you. And chances are he never even checks the stats!

thanks, girls. It would be really funny if it wasn't that the main character is me!!! I should write a short story about this. Detroit, would you publish it? - just kidding (about the publishing, not the writing the story. I think tonight is writing night). I won't die of embarassement just b/c I have too much work to do.

Detroit, I can confess that I was checking him and found out about the stats, but I wouldn't be able to tell about the crush part. It's jsut too much for me - I am also pathologically quiet and shy.

And, Ilovechoo: he is an engineer. Engineers DO check the stats. I have dated more than one, and they are probably the only species that checks the numbers.

PS sorry my computer freaked out too, and doesn't let me write your names in bold

poor ico! don't worry, it'll be ok.  this kind of stuff happens all the time, esp. because myspace and friendster, et. al. are so popular now and they all have those "who has viewed your profile" features.  from now on just make sure to check the NO box before any cyber-stalking begins ;)  he's probably flattered or doesn't even think anything of it.  i wouldn't admit to anything though.  he probably won't even bring it up because it would sound conceited on his part if he did!  and if he did bring it up just nonchalantly say "oh yeah, the internet is so cool like that, it's such a good way to stay in touch with long-distance friends.  I especially love it because it helps me stay in touch with my family in Rome. Have you ever been to Rome?  It's a wonderful city..." and then start talking about Rome. voila, subject change accomplished! and it sounds like a wonderful short story, have fun writing it!

If this guy is like most engineers (my dad was one, and I have a ton of pre-engineering friends) he's probably shy with girls, and if he does check the stats, will be incredibly flattered. I have some friends with their own webpages too, and they get SO happy if people visit them. Maybe this could be a good thing for you?

Ugh!  I fricken hate these "who has viewed your profile" thingies.  I got busted doing this to some girl I didn't get along with on AIM way back in college.  You have to just ignore it and hopefully he will too.  It will pass.

oh gosh.  im sorry.  that is so embarrassing.  i agree with the other girls, i wouldn't mention it unless he does and i don't think he would bring it up either.

you aren't alone.  i fell for one of those stupid crush quiz things on myspace because i was really bored one day.  a guy i had a thing for posted a "crush predictor." you go to some website and enter names of people you have a crush on and whatnot and i thought it would give some silly prediction that would amuse me.  no, instead it sent and email to the guy who posted it (my crush) with my answers indicating he was my crush.  i wanted to die.  i emailed him and said something about how i was so embarrassed.  in hindsite, i should have told him i knew it was a joke and i was just messing with him.

Omg - your post freaked me out so badly I just checked facebook to see if it has this feature! )No, whew...) It'll be ok sweetie. If he was going to be freaked out by it, it would have happened already... I love the part where you ripped out your web cable, btw. That is totally something I would do!

This is a hilarious story, ico. I think you should totally write it up. I don't know if you remember but if you think you're OCD about this guy, you should read my insanity about this dumb boy last summer sometime. I was convinced he was awesome (2 kids and divorce and all) and I made a chart comparing the number of phone calls, emails, in person visits, etc. It was all very insane so I can feel you 100%.

That said, I agree that if he did find out it was you checking out his website, I'm sure he'd just be flattered. Who wouldn't be? Just don't do it anymore. And, besides, he did keep calling you, right? So if he knew it was you, he liked it.

bluebirde , you make me feel normal.
Thanks, girls. I have already started writing it up, then I have lost my inspiration (may be b/c I am at work), but I'll definitely finish the story. I am sure wherever it ends up, he'll have chance to read it. That's how this day is going.

We were exchanging e-mails with the other people on a business team, and I asked something thinking the e-mail would go to a guy, when it actually went to another guy.

To get back to the topic: I am itching to go back to the web-site and check who has checked it. I saw a lot from Cornell, and they weren't from me. Who is here checking that website?

Repeat with me. thou shalt not click on that link
thou shalt not click on that link
thou shalt not click on that link...

when you say the stats, what info does it show?  more than an IP address?  just curious exactly how he would know it was you for sure.

I never got confronted on the issue, but back in like 1999, my bf at the time once showed me a link to his company's webcam that happened to be posted on a page of their official website, it had two cameras, one posted outside (for security I guess) and one aimed right at my bf's floor/cubicle area.  It was in real time, so I could basically check and see if he was actually at work late at night when I hadn't heard from him.  I was admittedly obsessive about it when I wouldn't hear from him or know where he was, needless to say, that relationship didn't work out.  Point is, I didn't know it at the time, but later when I knew these sorts of things could be tracked, I am 100% sure that he DID know I was spying on him.  He worked as a flipping web designer at a tiny company, so I don't know how I could have been so naive.

Do restrain yourself from further visits to the site.  I would bet your guy does know you have been checking the site, trust your intuition, that may very well be why he seems to have lost interest.

lorelei, the stats show the server you were connected when you check the site. Like, it said lolink.com for my today's "incursion" and the time (10:12 am), but would say "University at B" for my earlier visits. Ando I don't think he knows anyone else there!

As for the interest loss. At the beginning I checked the site a lot b/c I had e-mailed something to him and he didn't reply not even with a short thank you,
I was curious to know what was going on. then he contacted me, and explained he had had health issues and had been away from computer for the whole time. And I stopped checking the web site at that time. Went back today to see if anything had changed.
Right now I think he is getting ready to have surgery next week, why I havent' heard for 4 days, but you never know...

Definitely I'll try to stay away fromt here!

I agree. Most guys don't really pay attention to stuff like us females do. I would just stop going or just not very often. Like detroit said, if he brings it up- just confess but otherwise act like you never knew the difference.

Are you really interested in this guy?  I am just going to play the devil's advocate for a moment.  Say he did check and did see that you were checking his site.... and was totally flattered.  Then he saw that you stopped checking his site as often..... does he think that you are not interested anymore? ...

Of course that could be completely wrong but... something to think about
