Okay, IF I paint my bathroom, I want to try to paint over the wallpaper that the previous owners installed. It is the vinyl stuff and it is in perfect condition, but I think it's ugly. I think the texture might be cool to keep in the room as well. Anyone here ever painted over that stuff? What would I put on before the paint?
my parents did this in our house. There's a special primer for over wallpaper. Use it. If not, the paint will just peel off and it aint pretty (believe me, my bedroom was the first they tried to redo)
(edited because I'm bad enough at typing as it is, and shouldn't be doing it when I'm drunk. )
Yea, you definately need a primer of some sort. We painted over this awful wood paneling in our old house and didn't use anything but 2 coats of paint. Years later, you could literally scratch the paint off with your fingernail. AWFUL!
Ugh! I hate wallpaper. Yesterday we spent a few hours removing the wallperper from one of the walls so we can paint it. I thought we could just paint over it, but since it had been peeling already, the paint job woud have looked shitty. I say if the wallpaper is in good condition, then do it. If its peeling of in areas, you will have to remove it to have a good looking paint job.
go to your local paint store (a real paint store like ben moore or sherwin williams, not home depot type place where the person will have no clue about paint) and ask the paint person what they recommend.
i would probably use Zinzer 1-2-3 primer to cover wallpaper. it comes in a white can with a blue label and you can buy it pretty much everywhere (home depot, etc).
