i had my wisdom teeth out last thursday and the surgery was pretty painless. in fact, i was fine all day thursday and friday. i was thinking that i was home free! but my pain started to intensify over the weekend- i still relied on only ibuprophen, i never took the vicodin that they gave me (i've never been on painkillers before and they scare me!). i rested a lot.
i went to work yesterday (monday) and made it from 9-4 even though i was sooooo tired. i asked to leave early because my mouth was absolutely throbbing by then (still on ibuprophen). i was in a lot of pain by the time i got home and considered taking a vicodin, but i just took an ibuprophen and fell asleep. i felt a lot better when i woke up from my nap.
anyway, besides the pain, i have just been completely exhausted. so i called in sick this morning because i think my body is still worn out from working most of the day yesterday. did anyone else experience this much fatigue after wisdom teeth surgery? i mean, it has been 5 days now! the pain is bearable if i'm laying low, but when i'm up and moving a lot (like yesterday) it sucks.
also, when will the pain go away? is it possible that i have dry sockets? i was under the impression that you get those when food gets caught in the holes and i'm not on solid food yet and i've been doing the salt water rinse religiously.
For me, the pain wasn't very bad at all at the beginning. Like you, I was achey and uncomfortable more a few days down the road than immediately afterwards. I started swelling alot after the 2nd or 3rd day and I think that's what contributed to my pain. I never took any vicodin or anything either (except the one they forced me to take immediately after the surgery but I was too out of it to argue).
As for being tired, everyone's body reacts to traumatic events (like having your wisdom teeth out) in different ways. Especially if there's pain involved because your body is trying to compensate for that. Don't worry about it too much. Just rest and chill out until you feel better. No sense trying to force yourself to go to work and being miserable all day, right? (Aside from typical work miserable-ness. )
painkillers will definitely make you sleepy, but from what i remember about having my wisdom teeth out was that the pain was the worst on the 3rd and 4th day, which would mean that the weekend would have probably been the worst for you.
the two things that i can think of...
you're weak from not eating. you should be at solid foods now... mashed potatoes, ice cream, etc. i don't know why you're not? it seems like your body may not be getting enough calories, which would definitely make you tired (along with taking painkillers).
the one time that i was extremely tired and on painkillers (i mean, awake 5 hours a day), was when i had a kidney infection. well, it turns out that i got mono while i was in the hospital. unfortunately, it's really common for people to get infections while being in the hospital (or even an outpatient center).
i hope you feel better. i would contact your oral surgeon and find out about the no food (you may not be super hungry, but you need to get some calories). i would also look into contacting your doctor to see if you can pop in and see if you have mono (if you've never had it before).
keep us posted.
also, make sure you continue with the salt water (especially after you eat) and make sure you take the painkillers with food.

thanks, girls... shopgirl82, i am eating soft foods. i meant that i'm not eating whatever i want yet- whoops, sorry i was unclear! i've been having milkshakes, smoothies, soup, pudding, applesauce, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, etc. i definitely haven't been eating as much as normal, but i am eating- otherwise i'd be realllly miserable!
ok good. because i was eating mashed potatoes hours after the surgery because i needed to take my pain meds!
i didn't mean to scare you. i didn't really think about it when i was tired non-stop. then i mentioned it to my doctor and sure enough, i had it. since you were not in a hospital setting for an extended period of time, you should be fine, but it is a slight possibility. i would give yourself a couple of days of lots of rest and nutritious foods and see how you feel.

It never hurts to call the doctor's office and ask. I had my surgery on a friday morning and I had developed dry sockets by sunday. It was very painful. I developed them by losing the blood clots in my mouth due to mouth breathing not due to food or sucking through a straw.
