Running for President
Permalink Closed

I am a member of The Association of Student Pharmacists at my school, And we have a very active organization in which we hold meetings once a week all year long where about a 100 or so pharm students attend and a couple faculty members.  We basically are involved in a lot of community charity work and implementing different programs around our area.

Well, I have been nominated, by an anonymous member, to run for an executive position for next year.  I am seriously considering running for President, but I need that extra push to get me to do it, as im somewhat hesitant, and was hoping I might get some support and motivation from my ST girls, only have until wednesday to decide!  Oh and I also have to prepare a brief speech about why I want to be president and what I plan on accomplishing while I am president.  Everyone on here is so intelligent and could use some help writing it.

My main reasons for running for president is for the experience, I plan on getting my MBA after pharm school, and being president would give me helpful skills i would need in the business world, example... president has to lead a weekly meeting of over 100 students and manage many committees.  The other reason is that it will surely help me with my resume and MBA application.  But neither of those reasons are things I can mention in my speech.

Do it!  Of course we will all support you!  There are only certain times in your life when you can do something like this so go for it!

definitely do it! This is a great opportunity, and you definitely seem qualified. I would just focus on what you want to accomplish as president -- are there any issues that need dealing with? Programs that need revamping? Or are there good existing practices you want to keep around?

Good luck! We're rooting for you.

Definetly run!!!  You would be a great Prez!  Tell us more about what the group does and what your mission is and maybe we can help guide you to what you might want to include in that speech.  Halleybird had some good brainstorming points.

Thank you girls!  I have decided to definitely run for president, now I am just freaking about the 100 page paper and speech I have to give to about 200 students and faculty.  At the end of this post I have listed the different patient care projects we work on and things we do so that you girls can maybe help me come up with some ideas of things I want to accomplish while president.  Here is my speech outline so far.. definitely needs some revamping and improvement!

  • Introduce myself, give educational background and a little about myself

  • Explain how much ive enjoyed being a part of the organization this year and how I want to become more involved

  • Here is where I would list my goals I would like to accomplish while president (which is where I think i need the most help)     GOALS:  find new ways to raise more money for the organization so that we can give back more to the community (I think I need to give some specific ways I could implement this and bring it to action), Get more involvement in patient care projects and take them to the next level, do more community outreach to underpriveleged people --- The general goals for me are to reach out more to the community, but I feel like I need to give specific ways in which I can Implement it and bring it to action.

  • Ways to make the current patient care projects better and more effective

Any help you could give me on preparing my speech and ideas on how to raise money and reach out to community would be great, I also feel like I need to say something about the current patient care projects that are going on and how I can make them better.  The list is below.

Patient care projects - as you might expect there is barely any involvement in some of these programs, but im not sure how to get people involved, especially when i personally am not interested in heartburn awareness or operation diabetes or immunization

  • Heartburn awareness - hold educational/screening sessions

  • Operation Diabetes - set up diabete screenings to give to patients

  • Operation Immunizatioin - go around the community givign immunizations

  • Chilli Cook off - raise money for Muscular dystrophy association, we actually have a chilli cook off, I am a head committe member of this

  • Katys kids - We go to elementary and middle schoools and talk to them about medications

  • IPSF - internation pharmacy committee that helps send books to other countries and we send and get students from other countries
