Are You Living Where You Want to Live?
Permalink Closed

i've decided (to my surprise) that i like to move and i get sick of places rather quick....i was ready to leave the midwest after high school, ready to leave the east coast after college, and i'm kinda already thinking where i want to move next (probably not for a couple of years).  i think chicago is perfect for my age, but i don't see myself living here too much longer.  i don't want to raise my kids in the city and my bf would NEVER move to the chicago suburbs.  i don't picture myself back home, and i don't picture myself living on the east coast....

where do you live now and where do you picture yourself living (maybe even at different stages in your life).....

I live in NJ and I LOVE it. I really can't imagine living anywhere else. It's the only place I've ever lived...I've visited other states, but they just aren't the same. However...since it's so expensive to live here, I may be forced to move later on down the line (like retirement age) and if I do have to move, I'd move to Texas...it's so nice there!

Ew, I'm not living where I want to! I live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and I HATE it. We're trying to move to Austin or San Antonio, Colorado, or even back to my home state of OK. It can't come soon enough for me...I really, really dislike the Dallas area. I've lived here for 5 1/2 years and I'm done!

it's so funny that both of you mentioned TX.  while i'm DEFINITELY not a TX kinda gal, my bf and i went to austin and i really felt like i could live there and raise a family there.  he has relatives in dallas (not for me), so we would have some family nearby if we moved there.  it has everything i want, warm weather, close to water, major metropolis nearby......i don't think i could live in any other part of texas though, only austin.

i have been secretly looking at houses on lake travis (my dream) online during my spare time.

currently, we both are more realistically looking to buy real estate in santa fe as a vacation/investment property.  i love santa fe for the art, the food, the proximity to the rio grande and taos, etc... but i don't think i would want to live there as my home.

my bf i think still has dreams of living in wyoming or montana, but i don't think i could live there, only vacation there....it's beautiful though.

Kinda.  I love living in Chicago right now, but I can't see raising a family in the city and my boyfriend also would never move to the Chicago suburbs!  We actually want to move to California in the next year or so.  I'm not a huge fan of the midwest...I hate cold weather.  Then again my family and friends are here.  So I think we'll go to Cali and see what happens.

I really like where I live now (Colorado).  The city is upscale and has plenty of both outdoorsy and cultural things to offer, the weather is phenomenal.  The only drawbacks are that it's not close to the ocean, the cost of living is a little high, and we're far away from our families.  For the time being, I'm loving it.

We are going to be moving back to Oregon, probably in 5 years or so.  We want to get a small piece of property there and build a nice house, and have lots of big family gatherings.  We also want to be nearer to our families once we have a baby.  Since I grew up there, I love it and can see past it's faults.  For me it's hard to love a place more than the place you grew up in, no matter how fantastic others may be.

Just curious.. Why doesn't anyone want to live in the burbs of Chicago?

I have visited Napersville and others and it doesn't seem so bad...

I don't know. We always thought we would move back up to NYC for a while and then eventually settle nearby (probably in CT) when we were ready to have kids. But we're both looking for new jobs right now and I suggested looking in that area too and it made us both really sad to think about moving away from DC. So who knows...maybe we're just not ready yet, or maybe we'll end up deciding this is where we belong.

Hell no.  I hate living in Iowa; There's nothing here that involve any of my interests!  In general, I don't like the midwest either because I hate winter.  Ideally, I'd love to live in California, but that's waaaaaay beyond my financial means right now (and will be for awhile)

I lived within 50 miles of my family in Louisiana for most of my life until I moved to Dallas 2 years ago. It's 9 hours by car & 1 1/2 hr plane ride, so I finally ok with that. I do like it here although I don't like the suburb I live in right now, mostly because I hate this house we live in. Other than that I like the shopping opportunities & it's really pretty here.

Since I've moved away from my parents, sisters, nieces now I'd just assume be anywhere, so I wouldn't mind moving somewhere else. Although I don't really see that happening. The only other place we have ever seriously talked about moving is the Phoenix / Scotsdale area & I just don't know if I could go where it was even HOTTER than here.

i want to live in the venetian in las vegas.

but i'm okay living in SC.  it took awhile for me to get used to living with the southerners, but i guess i'm getting along.  i used to have issues about not being able to shop here.  but now all i do is shop online, so that problem is solved.  i really miss a city ( not that pittsburgh is huge)  but it is a city.  this is so stupid, but i wish there were tall office buildings here; but they'll sink.

I don't know - I think you'd have to grow up there to understand, or live in the city.  I lived in the suburbs my whole life and I can't imagine going back there.  It's just sooo boring and there's nothing to do.  It's just not what I want.  There is so much more to do in the city - the burbs just bore me to tears.

Not really.  I really don't like Raleigh very much at all.  If I could, I'd live in San Diego again, but it's just so damn expensive.  I like North Carolina, but Raleigh just kinda sucks.  I'm thinking maybe we might move to Charlotte within the next few years, but I honestly have no idea.

I am happy where I am now but that might be because I moved here less than a year ago.  I would love to live in San Diego but I don't think I could ever afford to live out there.  I also agree with the city vs. burbs girls.  I hate the suburbs and I don't think I will ever move out of the 610 loop here in Houston because I can't stand traffic and commuting.  We don't have a very good public transportation system here either so that is not an option.

i've lived in the OC and LA for my whole life, and now i am moving to san francisco.  i am excited about it, and i love the city, but i don't see myself staying there forever.

i've been really happy in LA, and my parents will always live in OC.  eventually i plan to live in laguna beach, in a small cottage by the sea.  this will either happen when i am married and have children (and can coerce my husband to do what i want), or when i get to about 45ish and know that that life has passed me by and then i will get the cottage by myself and live happily ever after near my friends and family.

i could also see myself living in texas, though--i love it there and i even like dallas.  maybe for a few years somewhere in there.

Me too!  It's so awesome here.  I call where I live "The Hidden Jewel of NJ" it's that awesome and somehow kinda unkown (ok, not really, but comparetively speaking).

The only way I would want to move is if we were suddenly super rich and could afford houses in Laguna Beach, the Florida Keys, and then one in Italy -in the country somewhere like in the movie, "Under the Tuscan Sun."  And then we would still probably want a house here.

ETA: THinking about it I do have a special place in my heart for DC.  I always loved the tri-state area and used to have grand dreams of moving to Carderock.  It's so dreamy and country like there with places to go repelling, and beach-like places to lay out, but it's RIGHT OUTSIDE DC, MD, and VA.  Oh, I think I want to live there still.  Also, I used to dream about living in a rowhouse in Georgetown, DC.

I'm happy and I'm not happy.

I like Los Angeles...I really do. When the weather is great, it's really great. I have a few friends here that I would sorely miss, plus since LA is the first city I've lived in as an adult, there's a lot of sentimentality attached to the places I've been. I'm just not in love with the people and could never imagine raising a family here. It's also grossly overpopluated...a fact that is emphasized every time I try and go more than 5 miles away from my apartment.

If I could choose a place to live, it would most definitely by the NYC/NJ area hands down. I adore the area, it's easier to get around and I feel the area has more personality than Los Angeles. I think a lot of it is because I was born in NYC and grew up in the suburbs. I would be happiest there, but financially it's not remotely feasible for me to leave.

Hubby and I live in the DC suburbs and I'm a mix of happy and unhappy.  I *love* DC, but living out at the end of the metro line in Northern VA makes going into the city a bit annoying.  So, usually laziness wins and we don't go out very often, which really sucks.    So, I wish we lived actually in the city, but that's not doable, we have too much stuff and can't afford a place to keep it all in the city.

Ideally, I'd love to move to Europe, which may be feasible at some point in my life since Hubby has dual citizenship w/ the UK.  But, we'd have to get jobs, and it would be hard moving away from my family, especially if I had kid/s, since I'd have no free babysitter!

I have lived in Texas, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and California. Right now I am in San Diego. After being in so many different regions and cities, I prefer living in an urban area. I loved living in Boston, and I was so sad when I had to move to CA with my parents (I was still too young then to be on my own). I would love to live either in NYC, Boston, or maybe San Francisco if I had to stay on the west coast.

I live in the suburbs of Chiago and I love it...I live right by Oakbrook in Westmont...The housing prices are fair and there are tons of great schools. I work in the city, so I am there everyday, and take full advantage of all it has to offer...but I also feel I can get everything around where I live....I like right by a great mall...OakBrook...all the stores you need....Tons of grocerystores near by, including trader joes.
I love the city, but I do not like dealing with parking, high home prices, and send my kids to private schools.
