Has anyone seen it? I saw it a few weeks ago and forgot to post on here. I thought it was really good. Of course, like Pride and Prejudice, it's based (or draws influence from or is a remake of, whatever) on Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky, which is my favorite book (tied with P&P).
Any thoughts? I thought it was really interesting the way it ended, the opposite of C&P, if anyone's read it. I won't talk about it unless someone posts who has seen it, so I don't spoil anything.
I've been wanting to watch this. Thanks for the review. I didn't know it was based off of C&P. Now I am looking forward to it even more. Not that I read through all of C&P, I admit I only got through the intro and first chapter. Hehe
I thought it was really good too. Unfortunately the review I read in the New Yorker pretty much gave away the ending -- which I won't do here -- but don't read that if you haven't seen it yet. Without being too revealing here, there were a few elements that I found to be a bit of a stretch, especially with the family's treatment of the main character.
I didn't know about the C&P ties either until I saw the movie. There were several references to the book towards the beginning, which I thought was odd, but as the movie went along I realized what the story was about. It's very cool. I definitely recommend it.
I really liked this movie but I also hadsome complaints. I thought the first half kinda sucked. The script and acting were kind of so so and a lot of scenes felt really cliche and forced. Also, although I love Woody Allen to death he's pretty egotistical and thus has a problem with editing. A lot of the scenes ran pretty long. I think it's cause of these problems that the movie isn't the Oscar gold everyone hoped it would be. However I still really liked the second half and it really stuck with me.
