Lately- I don't like anything I see.  I don't know what's wrong with me!  I think...hmm, i like this now, but i won't like it in 6 months.  So i shouldn't waste my money.  And for some reason, that depresses the hell out of me.  I don't even have trendy taste.  I need to find the piece that "speaks" to me, but since i'm so picky- i literally have nothing i feel like wearing ever.  My taste has gotten pretty expensive (so i buy maybe one thing a month, maybe)- in the sense that i really want unique design, nice fabrics, and nice fits- but nothing satisfies me.  When somethings really expensive- like $200 or up for a piece of clothing, I can't help but think 1) that's a lot of $$$ and 2) for the most part, i'm just paying for the name.  and if its expensive but sort of mainstream (ie main big designers and contemporary designers- from chanel to ella moss, etc)- i think, hmm every rich girl in nyc will have the same thing.  But then when I find pieces i really really like that are from H & M, i think, hmm everyone will have this too.  And when i go to vintage stores- i never really find anything i love and if i do, something is off- either the fabric is icky or it smells bad or i want to change the colors or something.  I think i'm reaching that point where i either have to start designing for myself or go naked.  i feel so bad that your lynnie is saying these things on a fashion board, but i'm really going crazy.  I'm scared for spring because i won't have any clothes!!!!!  I officially like really obscure things now, and i'm about to sell off my whole closet and start over- i feel like i'm at a weird breaking point.

Do it! Who knows you may have a talent for it that will benefit us all!

Im more of a mainstream shopper- any pieces over 100.00 are out of my reach financially- so designer clothing is not an option. But, I would say I am thus far underwhelmed at the offerings of the stores I frequent: Banana Republic, Macys, Nordstoms, Gap, etc...the styles a bit redundant, and you do ask yourself- "Am I going to see these pieces on everyone?" Most likely yes, so you have to be all the more creative in the combination. With me though, I am feeling a need to add clothing to my wardrobe for spring and summer that are casual and comfortable- these are the pieces that I end up grabbing for on a day to day basis- and I seem to lack variety in this catagory , so I end up wearing the same things over and over. My objective Is to buy more basics and add new articles such as belts, shoes, simple jewelry etc... to make the mix current. Maybe as the season draws closer you will see things that inspire you, or again,  will design for yourself- we would all love to see your creations and could also say we knew you well before you were famous! Ha!!

I've been feeling this way too and when I started seriously thinking about it, it developed around the time I began my shopping ban.

I would love to break my shopping ban, but everything I see and like I don't like enough to buy or or feel that everyone will have it or something similiar...etc.

Nothing shouts to me when I'm in a store, now granted I have been staying out of most shops but even window shopping I don't feel any particular pull to a piece.

Hopefully this will change or I'll be wearing older clothes and looking totally out dated.

I agree with you completely. Plus everything i like is out of my price range. When I go shopping now, I have an idea in my head of what i want but I can't find it. Or it doesn't fit right. Which is really annoying.

I think you should start designing clothes, that would be awesome. I am sure all of us would buy them.

yep, I've started doing this myself! I'm really too picky for my own good. I have the same issue with price/ wanting something everyone else doesn't have/ scrutinizing fabric and construction. Shopping has gotten very frustrating lately!

I have suffered from this feeling my whole life. I didn't find a pair of winter boots I could tolerate until December. I still don't have a hat or scarf that I like. I'm just wearing old ones out of necessity. I get visions of clothing, shoes, etc., but when I search for them, I do not find anything like it. I'm picky about everything, though. That's why I don't have any furniture. I don't want anything in my house I don't love.

I definitely know how you feel. I was looking at my closet this weekend, and I realized that I really only like a few pieces, and I wear those to death so that I am sick of them, and basically I have nothing to wear...bleh. I feel like a lot of the cuter items somehow just don't fit right, (I am super picky about fit above all else) because I order stuff mostly from online that I can't try, and usually don't bother to return them. I would buy more clothing in person, but everytime I go shopping there is no selection, or everything I like is way out of my price range. I am trying to get more basics that I can wear in different ways and concentrate on interesting accessories. It would be totally awesome if you designed for yourself!

Ditto.  I think I've always been somewhat picky, but I'm starting to feel like I'm extra picky now because I feel like if I'm breaking the ban or using up any of my $100 allowance it had better be worth it!

I went out shopping yesterday...I was ready to spend, in fact I needed to spend for my mental health. What did I buy? Mascara and body lotion and ONE necklace in F21!

I looked and looked, I tried things on I walked one end of the mall to the other and nothing was worth it. I may wander over to BR lunch time, but again it seems that I feel the whole world is wearing BR too.

I am thinking this Saturday I may wander over to a few vintage/thrift stores and a consignment shop I like and maybe, just maybe I can drop some bucks.

I'm really picky myself, and it is just getting worse.  I went to the Seattle Premium Outlets Saturday with a big shopping load in mind and came home only with one thing (at least I found my perfect white pants).  And they had fabulous Presidents day sales even additional 50% off coats and winter accessories at Coach on the clearance stuff!  Nothing was just good enough.  Also Banana Republic had the nicest cardigans for only $15 but they were 3/4 sleeve so I passed.  Just put it this way, if your not spending money on things that aren't perfect enough, your actually saving tons of money from buying crap that won't last or you won't like next week!

Lynnie, I totally hear ya.  I tried to go shopping and buy some new things on Saturday, but I really didn't like anything I saw.  I came home empty handed Everything was either too summery, too boring or poorly constructed.

I can attribute my problem to the annoying transitional season.  It's around 45-55 here - too warm for a winter sweater and too cold for spring stuff.

Here are the specific things I was looking for:

- ballet flats.  Where are they???  The only cute ones I saw were the Manolo version.  I will probably settle for JCrew's.

- a chunky cotton sweater to wear over dresses and sleeveless tops.  This is a huge look in all the mags, but I couldn't find one ANYWHERE.  I have some cute wool ones, but as mentioned earlier, it's too warm for me to wear them.  I tried and thought I would spontaneously combust.

- some cool belts.  Again, a huge trend, and Neimans and Saks had about five to choose from.  Even Anthro's selection was sad.

So, a huge thanks to all the stores for keeping me from spending my $$$.

I saw a pair of just plain ballet flats, very similiar to those many people bought from Target a little while ago on sale on the Nordstrom Website. If that helps. Also I bought a chunky cotton sweater last weekend from the Banana outlet for $15. If you have one, they might also carry something similiar.

i don't consider myself picky but i definitely do have a certain taste. i have been on an unofficial ban since last year. i can only find a couple of items that suit my taste every so month and that's it. i'm really looking forward to spring and wearing pretty dresses but nothing amazing has caught my eyes and amazing is what i aim for. i don't settle.

i have no advice but only to say i understand. my closet is naked. i just can't stand cheap looking clothes and that's all that exist around here. even sf shopping doesn't interest me.

naked me is how it's gonna be.

jj, I saw some interesting belts in my local AE store this past weekend. The ones I saw aren't online, but you might want to check your local store! Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but there was a chunky woven one that especially caught my eye.

i've been meaning to reply to this thread! i think that your pickyness is actually a blessing in disguise. you've always had great style and now you're really defining it.  as for me, i have the same problem w/ expensive taste and it's just getting worse which is kinda scaring me tbh.  but the best thing about it is i have some really special pieces in my closet as a result.  anyway, don't be too hard on yourself and by all means start designing, i think you'd be amazing at it!

OMG Lynnie!  I am with you on this topic.  I have been to the mall the past 2 weekends and shopping online and I can't find anything I like or anything that I would even buy to wear to work.  Its so frustrating because I am in need of work clothes and I just can't find anything.  If I ever find anything cute I'll be sure to let you know and if you start designing you better design for me too

thanks girls- i'm glad i'm not alone!
like said, i think some of it has to do with the mindset of being on a "ban"- even though i still spend plenty- i don't get much for my money it feels. I think I can't find anything i like, but really, i spend over what i should each month, and just buying one item!! I think my taste is just getting too expensive for myself and its easier to not buy clothes. plus my taste is changing, my closet is small, i moved to nyc and work in the fashion industry- perhaps its best i take a break!!

I don't buy anything I don't absolutely love. I usually know as soon as I see it.

I'm on the complete opposite end of the spectrum as you. I really want a ton of stuff but I can't justify spending the money right now. I don't have a particular "style" but I'm trying to find one, so I'm increasingly getting the urge to spend money!

I also understand what you're saying in that you don't want to buy things that other people will have. But you have to ask yourself how often have you really seen this happen. Is it enough times to matter?

I feel your pain though. I hate when I'm stuck in a clothing rut, which I'm sort of in right now.
