my mom can't stop talking about "marley & me." it must be the greatest book ever, because i have heard the same little anecdotes out of it about 8 or 9 times each.
The Curious Incident is super good and it's really quick. I had not read for a while when school got intense, but I picked up this book after Christmas and it got me back into reading.

I really enjoyed "Devil in the White City," but books about young women getting abducted make me a little paranoid for a while after I read them. So if you're feeling at all vulnerable to being freaked out, I'd recommend not reading that one right now. My BF's parents are reading "Marley & Me" and they love it.
Devil In the White City is great. But some of the parts about the buildings can drag, especially if you aren't all that into architecture. A Million Little Pieces is a cool story, but IMO poorly written, even aside from the fake stuff. My dad liked Curious Incident but he LOVES Marley and Me. I haven't decided if I am going to read it yet, because he told me the end is sort of sad, and I just can't handle dog sadness in books.

oh no. i can't deal with sad dog stories either. i won't leave my dog alone if i see or hear something bad happening to another dog. that narrows it down to 4!

Now of course I still haven't read this, but my mom, who said I had to read it, knows not to recommend a book or movie where an animal, especially a dog, dies violently. I cannot handle it. I was under the impression that this was the celebration of a beloved pet's life.
My impression is that Marley and Me is a celebration of a beloved pet's life, but the author wrote it after Marley had died. I don't think he had a violent end, he just lived a normal dog lifespan. But since I haven't read this, I am just going on what I've heard.

Scarlett is right. My dad promised that the dog lived a normal life and died normally, which of course is still sad, but not traumatic at all. I just can't handle any dog deaths. I am sorry, I should have clarified that!
