Did your mother influence way dress\dont dress?

I was looking at pictures of my mother in the late seventies and she was so cool and hip. Although at the time I can remember being mortified at the colors, boldness, and styles she wore! This one of her that stands out in particular, because I remember it so clearly, she has her hair cut real short- alot like the short style natalie portman has right now - but it was platinum blond, she has huge hoops on, knit gauchos- like todays- and a really "ella Moss" looking top on with wedges. She changed her hairstyle, color like you would change your nail polish and always had the most beautiful clothes- although a bit wild for the small town of Sacramento, ca. I do realize though that I share her adventurous spirit with my hair, I love clothes, fashion, the "art" of it. I think that what I learned most from my mothers style is the idea that your hair, clothes, makeup: it is like a canvas that  creatively can take you anywhere you feel to go and maybe sometimes where you never should of considered! Ha!

She definitely inspires me how not to dress! I just can't imagine myself wearing cutesy print pants with a matching shirt, etc, but I feel like she dresses like a mommy. I on the other hand will never wear stuff like that, although I can remember when I was younger I certainly did.

My mom is always very polished and put together, she was the one who taught me about finishing off an outfit with jewelry, investing in classic pieces like good shoes and bags and how wearing too much of anything, especially designer logos and most prints comes off as tacky.

My mom is a bit of a snob, but she always looks gorgeous...sophisticated but not over done...so YES she had a huge impact on me in a very positive way.

absolutely - my mom always hates my outfits & admits she doesn't "get" them & that's just the way I like it. When we shop, if she hates it, I know it's for me.

Actually, I am influencing her fashion

I give her tips and help her pick things out. I got her into watching What Not To Wear, so that helps too.

She is stuck in this world where everything has to match exactly, and I am showing her new color combinations. When she sees me in an outfit she always says, "I would never have thought to put those colors together, but it works." She's getting better.

Hahaha...Laken, you crack me up.

My mom has had a big influence on my style.  She's very polished and put together and we both tend to take the simple/sleek look when we accessorize--nothing too bold or over the top.  We have very similar tastes and our closets are quite similar.  However I don't know where my expensive taste comes from.  My mom is a bargain hunter; I am not.  She doesn't own anything "designer" and would never.  But other than that, we're very similar.

my mom has never really ahd a style of her own.  she is not a trend follower and she has allways been just a t-shirt and jeans person.  a lot of her problem is she doesn't like to spend a lot of money on clothes, and she is a sasquach(she is 6'5") so it is hard to find clothes in her price range.  but since i have started paying attention to fashion and creating a style of my own, she has been taking a lot of tips and hints from me and asking my advice and trying to be more stylish.  it is kind of funny and weird at the same time.  and she has never worn heels before.  she was allways afraid because she is so tall, that it would make her look like a freak.

she takes a lot of makeup advise from me too, which is funny because your mom is supposed to teach you to do makeup.  i just bought her, her very first set of makeup brushes for christmas.  she had never used them before.   she had a drug problem for a long time, and by the time she was ready to be a real mom i was allready pretty much grown.  so i think that had a lot to do with it.

ha Iam the same way with my Mom when she goes shopping for clothes I usually go with her, I have showed her different colors and styles that fit her body type. She tends to like to match exactly and she has now started to mix and match- yeah!! In fact we are going shopping sunday she needs some new jeans. I do like some of her fashion items but my Mom loves bright colors, sparkly things and big, big earrings  I on the other hand  like it toned down . But it feels good when she is shopping for something and she calls me and ask for my advice or tells me later she wishes I was there with her

My mom has always let me wear whatver I wanted (even ridiculous things like the time in kindergarden when I wanted, and did, wear a Bounce sheet in my hair ) and I think that was really smart of her.  We have completely different styles; I don't HATE her style but it is kind of mumsy.  She definitely goes for comfort while I tend to go for looks.

Like theotherjess my mom always let me wear whatever I wanted, which I think is cool. I've always been difficult and she said that she learned to pick her battles and whether or not my leggings matched my sweatshirt just wasn't worth the effort. My mom couldn't care less about what she wears. She doesn't look bad, she just wears sweaters and jeans, but clothes are just something she doesn't have any interest in. If I tried to give her tips she just wouldn't care.

My mom didn't influence me, but my aunt certainly did-she got me hopelessly hooked on the Rack (in SF-long before it came to Scottsdale)-she has a great eye for color combinations and unusual items. She is very classy, yet not boringly classic.  She has never dressed trendy or cheaply although she is a great bargain hunter.  Her house is the same way - incredible antiques with tons of plants arranged very eclectically. She is and will always be my style idol.

Laken1- you are hilarious!

My mother was an "only" child (her brother is 8 years older than her), and her parents (my gp's) are well off, so I am sure she dressed very well for the small town she lived in.  I remember my aunt (paternal side obviously) saying that "she could never shop where brooke (my mom) shopped." I guess the high end stores in town.

When she had me and my sister, we were not as well off and she did not-could not dress well.  Plus it was in the 80's- bad dressing all around.

Now that she is able, she is a hot mama!  She gets a lot of her influence from me and InStyle magazine, when she thinks I am dressing too young for her.  She also has an  impeccable eye for quality (from her childhood) and is a great bargain shopper (from the not so wealthy days)!

Same here!  My mom hates shopping and thinks its silly to spend a lot of money on clothes.  Most of the stuff she wears every day is from Wal-Mart or Sam's Club, and it's not like she couldn't afford go to the mall if she wanted.  I guess she just prefers to buy her clothes at the same place she buys her paper towels.  Needless to say, I blame her for looking like a total nerd in highschool.

She doesn't get "fashion."  (For instance, any shoes that are even remotely pointy are "witch" shoes to her.)  Everything I know about style and enjoying what I wear I've learned on my own.  I really don't know where my fashion bug comes from, since none of the women in my family on either side are particularly stylish.  I was, however, very influenced by my older, more stylish cousin growing up.

It actually amazes me people who don't get fashion or simply don't care.  I just can't imagine not caring.  If I dressed like I didn't care, it would be tantamount to going out naked.

My mom loves shopping and she's a bargain hunter to the extent that it's quite ridiculous. She'll buy anything if it's cheap enough - she doesn't really care if it's the wrong size or a terrible color. She doesn't even wear most of the stuff she buys on sale and there are piles of clothes all over the house, which doesn't always make my dad very happy, I might add...

I do have the same weakness for sales but I try to keep my wardrobe a bit more edited.

I actually like the way she dresses for work and her style isn't all that different from mine. Mine is just younger, and I care about brands whereas she definitely does not.

My mom always let me wear what I wanted (which I love and hate her for, depending on the outfit).

She was super-cool in the sixties and seventies and I have alot of her now-vintage stuff. She has gotten a bit mumsy and I can not stop her from being matchymatchy. She gained and then lost quite a significant amount of weight and has started to dress alot more fashionable again now that she is thinner. I am an influence to her too and we share a great love of shoes. My mom has a wonderful shoe collection that I want to steal. Sadly I have a bit bigger feet than she does (but sometimes I squish!).

My mom has great style and flair. She is not a "classic", more of a funky-modernist kind of dresser, and very creative, which goes well with her profession (she's an architect)! It took me years to get liberated from my mother's style and develop my own. I can't really wear her kinds of clothes - I'm shorter and curvier, so whatever looks good on her looks weird on me, and vice versa. We love shopping together :) My grandmother was the one who most influenced my sense of style. She was the most stylish woman I've ever known. Grandma made her own clothes and always had the latest Parisian fashions

my mom is a fabulous dresser. i think the biggest thing i've gotten from her is the fact that she dresses for herself, not for others. which is something i try to do in my everyday style.

My mom used to be very hip and trendy. I remember seeing pictures of her in the 70's and thinking how cool she was. Then the 80's hit, and she bought out the world's supply of leather. Jackets, pants, bustiers... red, black, white... very cool at the time, but not what I would call classic . She had my sister in '82, me in '85, and had to join the rest of the world in the workplace in '89. The leather got tossed in the donation bin, and her fashion-awareness went with it. She turned into a jeans- and sweater-wearing kind of lady. She and my dad quit smoking in '96 and she gained quite a bit of weight. I think she lost most of her self-confidence, because she now buys XXL in all of her tops (at most, she's a large), which she does not wear if they do not cover her bum. Either that, or she honestly, truly does not care about the fashion world (which I know not to be true).

My mom has an eye for style, even though she doesn't use it for herself. She's always showing me cute clothes in catalogs and magazines that are totally "me". She always dressed me well and taught me to dress well when I was old enough. When I look at pictures of my friends and me when we were younger, I'm always the best dressed

So, yeah, my mom does influence the way I dress and don't dress. She taught me everything I know, but kind of in a "do as I say, not as I do" way.

This is so funny, because my mom is so proud of this pair of jeans she bought at Walmart because they were so cheap (but believe me, they are NOT cute). I guess she just rather spend her money on things for the house and for her kids and grandchild.
