Self Cleaning Oven...
Permalink Closed

so lately (twice) when i have been baking in the oven, the kitchen gets really smokey and kinda burns my eyes.  so right now i'm am using the self cleaning feature on the oven and it's still giving off that smokey burning eyes smell/cloud.  i removed all the shelves/grate things like it said to do.

help!  i use my oven at least 5 times a week...do you think it will be fixed after it's done cleaning?  i can't handle this smokey feeling.

Are there any burnt pieces of anything hanging around the bottom of your oven?  If so I'd try to get those out the best I could first.

If you live in an apartment and that doesn't work, I'd call the landlord/maintenance.

usually when it cleans, there's gray "soot" on the bottom.

my eyes are seriously burning.  this stinks.

unfortunately (or fortunately...depending on how you look at it...we own the place) so i can't call a landlord.  i will have to wait till my bf gets home or this thing finishes cleaning.

i just don't know if this is normal for an oven when it cleans.  last time i had it cleaned, i was gone when it was cleaning.

If it were me, I'd turn it off immediately and hightail it to the store for a carbon-monoxide detector.  You could have a leak that's creating the weird smell and making your eyes burn.  And open a window if possible for the time being.

is it a new oven? Or is this the first time it's ever been cleaned? The smell is just awful the first time. But I've never cleaned a gas oven, so I'd try Elle's suggestion first.

Same happened to me.  Actually, it was so bad that I've only done it once.  I'll try it again when my girls aren't home and I can keep the windows open.  It was so bad that I had to cut it off mid-cycle.  Mine is electric, though, for what it's worth.

ha ha, the same thing happened to us. We'd never cleaned it in our old house (it wasn't used much, and only about 2 years old) and we tried to clean it once before we left. We lasted about an hour. My MIL says you pretty much need a full day with the windows open to get it totally clean the first time.
