I've never been but thinking about my parents are planning a big family trip over Memorial Day and Puerto Rico is a main contender. What's it like? Can you drink the water? No one in my family speaks Spanish, would this be a problem or is it like Cancun where everyone speaks English?
Any resort recommendations? Something upscale with nice pools, good resturants, and pretty beaches. To be honest, I'm fine with amazing pools and crappy beaches. Any resorts/areas to avoid?
I've never been but I've never heard the don't drink the water about PR. A family friend of ours went on a cruise out of PR a few years ago and she loved it there - no complaints. I don't really know much else. I think they have a pretty good mix of english and spanish speakers. My mom lived there for a while and she doesn't speak any spanish.
My family used to go to Puerto Rico every Christmas break....there is an awesome hotel that is totally up your family's alley. It is called El Conquistador, there are cool pools, and a private beach that you take a 5 min. boat trip too, casino, bars, great restaurants....your fam would love it! I always met cute boys there before I met my FI... ;) We also would see famous people there every year! Now I haven't been in a few years but I can't imagine that it has gotten bad.
I would also recommend the Wyndham El Conquistador. It is a distance from the airport, but it is definitely worth it. It is a very nice hotel, and it is really big with lots to do. The beach is a boatride away which is kind of annoying, but it is really nice.
I'm pretty sure I drank the water there with no problem.
If you stay in a touristy area like San Juan, most people speak English. You'll have a much harder time communicating in some of the less touristy areas (but these are also areas you probably wouldn't want to vacation in anyway).
