Vacation Pics!
Permalink Closed

I switched the pictures from kodak to shutterfly, so hopefully you can see them now

We just returned from a week in Tulum, Mexico.  It was total heaven.  We even had a successful new year's!  Today is my first day back at work, so I thought I would post some pics to try to put me in a better mood....

The view of the beach from our cabana.

We went with another couple - here they are, taking off on a snorkling trip.

The ruins in Tulum.  We lasted about 5 minutes here before running back to the beach.

Our cabanas at night.  There's no electricity, so everything is lit by candles.

Our beach.  Check out the crowds!  We were worried that the the beaches would be full of holiday travelers, but we only saw a handful of people each day.

Another view of the beach.

That last pic reminds me of a little spot on Smathers Beach in Key West that I love. Nestled right between palm trees. :) Looks like you had a beautiful trip.

We stayed at Cabanas la Conchita.  Another cool-looking place where we had lunch and popped into on new year's was Mezzanine.  It would be my second choice after la conchita.

Gorgeous pics, I'm jealous, my mom is from Mexico, but I've never been there.  One of my new year resolutions is to travel out of the country, so hopefully I can go this year.

that is SOOOOOOO gorgeous. Tell me more about the whole no electricity thing - how does that work? was it too inconvenient? I am intrigued but i'd be scared of it so I am dying to hear more.

OMG, I was sooooo nervous about the lack of electricity, when we first went (October 2004).  I had two main concerns: how would I tame my hair without a blowdryer??  Would I be able to sleep at night (because I keep our bedroom like a meat locker)?  This time, I was totally relaxed because I knew what to expect and came prepared!

CLC has solar power, so there are lights in the cabana from 6-11 p.m. and a fan over the bed runs from 11 p.m. - 8 a.m.  Because it's right on the beach, there is always a breeze, so I never overheated at night.  If I woke up, it was because I was cold.  I was shocked, because it was HOT during the day.

We also had tons of hot water for showers and they have gas stoves and refrigeration to keep food and cook the most AMAZING breakfasts.

Our rooms had tons of candles and we had to carry flishlights at night because the road to the other hotels and restaurants is pitch black.  And they had a few outlets in the main building to charge cell phones and ipods (thank god!).

The only downside - my hair was a mess  I would slick in into a ponytail or let it go wild (my hair is crazy curly).  So I don't really like any of the pictures with me in them   But on the up side, it would only take me a few minutes to get ready to go out at night!

For me, Tulum is the perfect combination of remote, but not too rustic.  It's not for everyone, but I like that, because hopefully it will keep the area from overcrowding.

I think there are a few places that have electricity, like Ana y Jose, but I have heard that they are not nearly as nice as CLC.  And then there are places that are literally shacks on the beach with sand floors.  That would be WAY too rustic for me!
