I feel so lost as to what I'm doing for my career!! I am 23 and I have not finished achool because I could not focus on anything. I first went to school to study marketing and advertising, then I thought I wanted to be a teacher and then I thought a radiologist... I am so lost. Ideally my career would be a boutique owner, but I feel like I need a different career first and then I can do that, plus I know you need a lot of money to open up any kind of business. Right now, I am working for a property managemnt company as a leasing agent. It is not much money and I know it isn't my career path, it's just the job I am working at til I find my career path. Hopefully I can figure it out soon. What did you guys do to find out what you wanted to do. I just want a goal I can work towards. I hate feeling so stagnant!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
I say just concentrate on getting a degree. Any degree. To be honest, I don't think it matters much. Just graduate from college first, then work on figuring out what you want to do, unless you want to be in a specialized field that requires a specific major (like you want to be a doctor).
Then enter the workforce and start figuring it out. It's much easier and much less expensive to change jobs than it is to change majors, so I would worry about the degree first and what you want to do with the rest of your life second.
You're only 23 and to be expected to know what you want to do until you retire is asking a bit much. I think if you ask most of us on this board what it is we want to do with our lives, you'd probably find that most of us have switched around in the past or are looking to switch around in the future.
I know it's hard to focus when you don't have a definite end goal in sight, but you just have to do it. Instead of trying to focus on "what you want to be when you grow up" start looking at smaller goals. Finish the next exam. Then enroll in classes for next semester. Then you study and you focus on the next exams. Do that until you're done. But you definitely don't need to worry about what it is you want to do with the rest of your life right now.
Hope this helps. Also, FWIW, I'll bet you ever single person on this board has been where you're at right now--feeling confused, lost, and unsure of what you want to do next. Just try not to sweat it and don't let those feelings get you off track.
Hey girl you sound like me 2 years ago. I had just graduated with a degree in Information Systems and thought I would have one type of job and then I got a job in tech support (nothing wrong with this it just wasn't for me) so I started freaking out and I felt lost also. I knew I didn't want to work in computers anymore but I didn't know what I wanted to do. So I just started talking to people I knew - young, old, male, female whomever about their job/career and why they picked it, what they like, dislike, etc and then I started researching the type of careers I could have and the classes I would take in college to see if it would interest me. You could try doing the same but don't freak out about it now. The average person now has 7 jobs in their life and multiple careers. You are young and still have time!
