My eyesight is starting to go (mainly reading.) I'm hesitant to get glasses, but I have an appointment for an eye exam on Tuesday.
A part of me feels that the more I work to focus, the longer I will retain focusing ability (because I'm exercising my eyes.) I fear that getting glasses will allow my focusing abilities to become lazy and exacerbate thier deterioration (please feel free to chime in on this -- this is a theory I conjured.)
I used reading glasses for the first time yesterday. I was definitely able to read the paper more easily. That said, I'm debating cancelling my appointment and just using the readng glasses.
If I keep the eye appointment, I'm going to ask about computer/reading glasses (prescription.)
I must admit, I'm a little excited about a couple of frame choices, but I definitely don't need to spend the money right now...
*sigh* new world for me -- thoughts?

I've worn glasses or contacts since 7th grade (and I probably could have used them a lot earlier.) I'm near sighted, so it's a little different from your situation, but I've never understood the stigma that surrounds glasses. They're tools. If I need a hammer to drive a nail into the wall, I use a hammer. In order to make sure I don't miss seeing anything, I wear my contacts (or old glasses if I'm lazy.)
I also go to my eye doctor every 2 years for a check up. Eyes & teeth are two things I don't mess around with. It think you should probably keep your appointment if only to make sure your eyes are healthy.
Plus, I think you could totally rock a cool pair of reading glasses. I kind of see you in a crazy pattered or interesting colored pair. Since you only will need them for reading, go crazy with them and make it fun.
I have needed reading/close work/computer glasses for awhile now. But I was really bad at using them. I've noticed lots of issues for me with night driving so I went for an exam. The doctor explained that since I wasn't using the glasses when I needed them my eyes were straining, then after a day of that they were so tried by evening, regular tasks (night driving) were harder on them. So based on you "muscle work" theory, you could be working your eyes too hard at certain periods and it might make them weaker at others. If your worried about costs, have them right up your prescription and get you distance measurement too. There are lots of very affordable online sources. Some like Warby Parker send you a round of frames to try out looks before you decide too.
Call the office to see if they are going to dilate your pupils during the exam. If you've never had an eye exam, they might (they do mine every few years.) You can't really drive after they dilate them and it takes a few hours for the pupils to go back to normal. You might want to have someone drive you to the appointment.

Yeah, we discussed this. Apparently the doc won't know whether to diliate until the exam.

Well, it doesn't hurt. And you get super cool looking shades to wear for a few hours. BTW- this is NOT me.
I say keep the exam, you never know what they will find. If anything, get a prescription for lenses but don't purchase frames on the spot, that's where you get ripped off.
I also think it's a bit of a misnomer that once you wear eyeglasses you will have to keep increasing strength of prescription. I bought my glasses in 2001 and am wearing them right now. I've been to the doc a million times since then but haven't needed a change.

Very true. My prescription hasn't change in 10 years.
Also, has anyone used Warby Parker before? A friend of mine just told me about it. It's like Toms. "For every pair of glasses purchased, we provide a pair to someone in need." The site says it's $95 for frames, lenses, and anti-glare coating plus you can try on 5 pairs. I think I'm going to try it next time I want frames.

Wish I had seen your post before my appt. yesterday, Xtina!
I did not like the dialation. I couldn't read and felt nausious for hours. When the person behind the desk saw my prescription, he exlaimed, "that's nothing!" However, I do need something to help me read small print. I was told my eyesight was exceptional for my age, but with age, the eye's lense stiffens making it more difficult to focus up close.
I really like these:
However, I ended up getting these:
However, however, I can always order more if I want

I love the ones you picked out. I always prefer frames that are strong and dramatic - i.e. contrasty. It's not like you can hide the fact that you're wearing glasses. They don't blend in with one's complexion.
The WP styles usually appeal to me and I plan to try that next time. I don't like the glasses I have now. I went with my mom and she talked me into tortoise shell even though I've always worn black. She convinced me they were "softer" with the gray in my hair. I want a new pair but I have several months' worth of contact lenses before I need an exam. I'm probably going to need a bifocal next, and magnifying/reading glasses to wear over contacts when needed.
I tried on the others again, and did not like them at all. I like how the ones I chose have most of the visual weight at the top. I think I wasn't liking the contrast all the way around the frame -- looked aging to me for some reason (on me at least.) The ones I picked have a retro/artsy feel to them and more fitting for my personality, IMO.

As for vision improvements, I have no idea why/how. I guess it's possible I had performed unreliably on my vision test several years ago and got a too-strong prescription. ?? not sure.
Someone else (an acquaintance) on Facebook just had the same thing happen.
