I recently got my hair done at the salon. I'd already had some highlights, we ended up doing a full dye job over it, then more highlights. This meant 4 shampoo sessions (at the salon they lather, rinse, repeat for some reason). I then waited 7 days till my next shampoo to preserve the color/prevent dryness. When I mentioned it to friends, most of them reacted like I was a filthy heathen, despite the fact that my hair looked great.
When I had vertigo I went maybe 4 days. Not counting illness? One day max. My hair gets really oily by the second day. During the winter I tried an every other day washing regiment, but it just didn't work. I would love to be able to go a few days between washing, but I guess that I just don't have that kind of scalp glands.
I don't see why your friends thought that waiting a week to wash your hair was disgusting. I'm sure that you showered and you said that it looked good. When people get their hair professionally blown out, don't they usually wait as long as they can before washing it and ruining the sleekness? Why would it be any different from getting an all over dye job? You want to be as gentle to it as possible to keep the hair healthy.

I'll go almost two weeks without shampooing these days, but I use conditioner daily - the "co-wash" routine.
Ooh do tell, what do you use? I was thinking of trying this going forward since my hair still feels dry.
Not to speak for Su, but I've been using TresSemme Naturals. Sauve has some choices that are good too that don't contain the identified "bad" ingredients.

On the note, I'll share my childhood story: I come from the former Soviet Union. So, the tradition was....you wash your hair once a week. EVERYONE i knew, all the girls - ONCE A WEEK. I had very long hair all my childhood, traditional Russian braid, lower than my behind , so, in the braid it's not so apparant, but the bangs - become oily....I remember the conversation between me & my friend, we're about 14, finally cut our hair in layers (famous "cascade" style): "good cut!" - "you too!" "Now we have to see how it'll hold in a week before the next shampooing".....Yeah....I learned that you can wash hair daily when I immigrated, at the age of 16 1/2...shocking revelation!
I mostly use the tea tree conditioner from Trader Joes - I think it's a private labeled version of Paul Mitchell tea tree products. I sometimes use Hair One from Sally's beauty supply. This is their version of Wen. The ingredients are identical, only in slightly different sequences.
I was "cowashing" for a while, so I probably went about a month between shampooings then. But I don't know if that counts - I was still wetting and cleaning my hair.
The longest I've gone between *cleaning* my hair is maybe 5 days? I go as long as possible because I hate washing and blowdrying my hair (plus I color my hair, so it helps in that respect too), but my hair is fine so after a few days it really starts to get weighed down.
But I'd rather keep re-styling it or putting it in updos, even if that takes longer. In the summer I can eek out about three days between shampoos (first day I wash, second day I revive it somehow, third day I use dry shampoo and an updo, then I start all over again) but in the winter I usually go four days and I know I've gone 5 a few times (although the 5th day is usually not pretty...). I'll go as far as planning my workout routine around my hair schedule and "saving" the sweatiest activities for the night before I shampoo, and doing the less sweaty exercises the first couple days. :-X
I don't keep it a secret exactly that I don't shampoo every day, but I don't bring it up often either because I've definitely gotten the "you're gross" looks/comments (not from everybody, but from enough people that I don't want to mention it if I don't have to anymore).
ETA: Until I was about 20, I did shampoo my hair every day and never thought twice about it. I didn't even realize that some people didn't do it that often until college.

Ha, personally EVERY time I get a hair compliment it is on a day when I've shampooed (bc I usually do a blow out also). It was actually a running joke at work bc people would stare cynically asking "You did something differently... did you dye it? New haircut?" "Nope, I just cleaned it for once."
Same here regarding shampooing every day. I only started doing every other day after high school and lately am doing 2x a week. I usually use dry shampoo in between if neccessary.
