I see this all the damned time in NY. Women prance through Bloomies with their toes curling over the edge of a two-sizes-too-small pair of sandals. I guess it is the foot's version of muffin top.

Maybe she went to someone's house where guests are forced to take off their shoes before entering, and her own shoes were stolen or taken by mistake. She was forced to borrow these shoes from someone else just to get home.

This is the terrible consequence of making people take off their shoes at the door. Wah wah waaah.
