blubirde - i've thought about substitute teaching - do you have any idea how to get into it? do you need a teaching certificate?
You don't have to have a teaching certificate. Isn't it great? I went to the AISD offices (look online for Dallas locations) and got an application. I filled it out, got a copy of my transcript or whatever they needed, and dropped it off. Simple as that. I never went any farther in the process because I got a law job soon after that. (I was going to sub while I was looking.) But my roommate did it for almost a year. She liked it a lot but the only bad thing is that sometimes they'll call you early in the morning to see if you can come in that day. Mostly you go online and check out when the jobs are available and sign up for them though.
i also substitute taught after I got out of college and was looking for a "real" job. i just applied at my local school district and the board "approved" me and i had to do some paperwork and get a background check. also, i had to get a certification which i think blubirde mentioned.
its fun, easy work... i particularly liked the HS and Middle School students. I taught ONE DAY of kindgergarten and refused to ever take on the youngsters again... that was the WORST day of my life!
