Coolest place you've worked?

Where is the coolest place you've worked, and why?

I temped at the Gap Inc. headquarters (the offices, not the store) in San Francisco last year. The actual WORK wasn't great, but the environment was cool. It was right on the bay on Embarcadero, it was 2 blocks from the Bay Bridge (great views), everyone was in their 20's and had hip wardrobes, there was tons of lunchtime shopping and restaurants.

Plus, there was a room that was set up with all of Gap's next season merchandise!! I could peak in and preview what would be in stores in a few months. That was fun.

In high school, I reviewed coffeehouses for our city's paper, which was really fun.

I also spent a summer working at the night copy desk of a major metro daily newspaper -- that was insanely cool, but also very difficult.

I was a temp at this office building doing basic office work.  I got my own office with a huge window with a view of the small airport and got to watch planes.  That place had such a slow pace that I basically got paid good money to play computer games and read.  The phone rang maybe once an hour and I did maybe four tasks a day.  Plus the place was close enough for my house that I got to go home for lunch.

I worked at the aquarium. It sounds cool, but I actually totally hated it. My boss was a self important bitch.

I remember you saying that you worked for my local newspaper, the Warwick Beacon, one summer... could this, perhaps, be what you're refering to? I can't imagine that anything in this place could be insanely cool .

I've only ever had one job, so I guess being a coffee girl is the coolest job I've ever had . I can't wait to find out what other, cooler jobs are like.

a gelato/italian cafe/coffee shop.  i worked there for like 3 years in high school to my fresh. year at college.  loved the place, the manager was a real softie for the ladies so we all just ate all day and kinda took advantage of the situation.  i ate probably $30 of food there a day:

Sample Sunday (not embellishing in the least)

*shot of espresso with tiny scoop of vanilla gelato

*choc. dipped biscotti

*omelette that i sweettalked the cooks into making for me

*some bites of fresh fruit from the buffet

*a croissant with apricot jelly baked in

wait a few hours...alternating bites of cantaloupe gelato , stratciattella (sp?) aka romeo and juliet gelato - cream and choc., pistachio, pineapple with coconut, mango, etc...

eddie bakes a pizza for the girls to share, i eat a small tomato and eggplant and mozzarella and pesto panini

then maybe some pasta fagiola soup and a bite of crab soup

later on...

maybe take home a cannoli or a piece of fruit tart or tiramisu, along with some cookies

make myself a vanilla latte or a mocha

I LOVED that job, mouth watering...

Well, I think RI is insanely cool! I did work for them, but not as a copy editor. I was actually referring to my hometown paper.

And I should qualify my "insanely cool" statement by saying that I am a nerd, and I think seeing a big newspaper before it comes out is ridiculously exciting

Yeah, after I reread what you originally wrote and saw that it said major metro newspaper, I realized it wouldn't be our little ol' Beacon. I think being a copy editor would be an awesome job, and I'm envious that you got to do it. I used to get all excited when we took field trips in elementary school to the Providence Journal and we got to see how it all worked... so I guess I'm a nerd too hehe.

I'm not even going to quote you Lynnie because that is so much food!  Are these just small bites or a big chow down?  I would love that job!  I always get hungry at work since I like to eat at least every two or three hours when I'm awake!

I'm jealous, I don't think I've ever had a cool job.

I was a truck stop waitress (horrid), a telemarketer (not any better), and now I'm in the Navy.  The Navy isn't so bad, it's just that a lot of the things I have to do/am forced to deal with don't align with my own political and personal values and ideologies.  I can't do anything about it though so sometimes it's kind of frustrating.  I have a year left and I'll be glad when I'm done although I do have to admit that overall it's been a good experience.

i worked at an EXPENSIVE dry-cleaners with my best friend in h.s.  it was great because we would come in at 4 and work till 7.  it was expensive so not many people came in (only brought things that had really bad stains) and the rest of the time we ate and watched t.v in back.  after work we would go to the gym together.  it was in a shopping center with a grocery store so we always had good food and one of our guy friends worked at einsteins and would always bring us chai tea, bagels, whatever we "ordered".  a lot of the NFL football players would come in (we wore our school uniforms to work cuz we were too lazy to change...thinking back, maybe that's why they all came to that cleaners )  we also had two rich old men would would always leave money in their pockets.  my friend and i convinced it was for us so we took it cuz they were SUPER DUPER loaded.  sooo bad.  we never took any money from anyone else though, only those two men.

there were some funny times, like the one time i had to explain to the man that because of health reasons we couldn't wash his black pants with white stains all over them.  .  remember, i was 16-18 at the time, quite an embarassing phone call for me.

we also had our hot older male crush come in.  we found our were he lived and drove by his apartment one time after work.  talk about stalkers!

it was the best job cuz it was short and i worked with my best friend with no management (except on weekends if she actually worked on weekends).

Maddie - Did you work at the aquarium on the waterfront in Seattle?  When I graduated from university I really want to work there doing water quality work.  I've heard it isn't a great place to work.

I work for a environmental group now, I love it.

Yeah I worked there. I was in this HORRIBLE teen program where it's like an internship. It was awful. My boss was this woman who was clearly just a failure at adult life and loved having impressionable nerdy teenagers around to validate her. She would go on and on about all the men she was dating (I'm sure she was lying) and all these painfully nerdy kids were just in awe of her. And she was on a huge power trip about being in charge of people. Her boss was also an irrational crazy bitch. Also, all the kids in the program were so lame. I'm a nerd (obviously, I worked at the aquarium), but these kids couldn't even carry on a normal conversation. As you can tell, I'm still bitter about this.

That said, the two people I reported to were in the education/volunteer division. The biologists and stuff were all really cool and I think it would be an awesome place to work in that area. Despite hating the people I worked with, I learned a lot and got to see some cool stuff. Talking about this makes me wish I was majoring in bio again!

One of my internships was at an art center that had a performance space and an art gallery.  I got to meet so many artists and performers and see so many shows and go to events.  And I was interning doing marketing and development/event planning.  It was great!  Hopefully, the job that I really want will pan out for me and it will be very similar to that internship (only better pay and more responsibility since it would be an actual job).

I LOOOOVED my summer job in HS.  I worked for a rafting trip company and I would spend my day outside by the river giving safety speechs and hanging out with the beach boys!  We used to throw each other in the water and run around like idiots.  So much fun. Plus, its where I met my best friends that I still hang out w/ to this day.
