First time at spa

Fun! I remember that unsettling feeling of not knowing what to do and how to act when I went into my first spa experience. To tell you the truth, I still get a little nervous - - even though there's really nothing to be nervous about.

The first thing I tell myself is that spa personnel have seen it all, so there is really not much you can do to freak them out.

Don't be afraid to mention this is your first time. I have had good luck with being upfront about that. They're usually very caring, friendly, and willing to assist.

Most massage therapists will give you instructions on what to do and when, including some regarding the highly anticipated concern of how much clothing to take off/leave on. I used to leave my underwear on out of bashfulness, but it makes for a less enjoyable massage (cuz the therapist can't give your lower back good, thorough attention because they're trying to not get oil on your undies).

There are some givens: turn off your mobile, arrive early, arrive clean, etc.

This page gives some good advice.

As for tipping, I think I just read that you should tip at the desk when you are paying at the end - - as opposed to leaving a wad of cash in the massage room, on the table or countertop. Not 100% sure on that, but it makes sense on the surface. 15-20% tips are the norm. I usually go for 20%.

I hope you enjoy!

My husband and I are getting a couple's massage next month at a local spa. This is the first time for either of us to go to a spa. What kind of etiquette rules do we need to know? Do we tip? How much? Also, what should we expect? thanks!

I'm going to my fist spa at the end of April (A Groupon that I'm saving as a treat for after my hell season at work.) If it's any help, I'm nervous too and have basically the same questions. I'm planning on asking the spa itself some questions when I call to make the appointment. I figure that I won't be the first to ask things like what to expect at a massage and how to properly tip the spa for multiple services (the deal includes a massage, a facial and a pedicure.) I'd rather ask and be prepared, you know? And I'm sure that a decent receptionist will know the answers right away.

Just arrive a bit earlier & be prepared/shaved/waxed/lazered whereever you feel you must, just in case. Have some basice makeup with you and hairbrush, to retouch your appearance after the procedure.

No major rules: usually quiet, no cell phones to disturb others.

usually a good spa will have tip envelopes at the front desk to put your gratuity and the therapists name on. its a nice easy way to tip them out at the end. 20% is what i usually tip out. enjoy!!!
