FINAL UPDATE: Shower Filter(s)
Permalink Closed

I know we've discussed this before, and I went back and found Kelly's review of the Jonathan Shower Filter (whatever happened to him anyway?). I just bought a shower filter and installed it today. I will review it after about 2 weeks or so.

Is anyone currently using one? Just curious as to what your experience has been regarding skin health and hair condition. I'm looking forward to less dry skin (fingers crossed).

I've been thinking about getting one, but haven't researched them, so I am anxious to hear what you have to say on the matter.

Early outcomes:  I've used the filter about 3 times, and I can already feel a difference. My skin doesn't feel tight and powdery after I dry off (you know that dry film you get after your skin dries after you've been in a chlorinated pool?). My hair is already softer and less frizzy. Looking good so far! I'll keep you posted.

Final outcomes:

Loving it! Highly recommend getting a shower filter. My experience prompted my husband to get one for his shower (we use separate bathrooms because he is a neat-freak and I am far from it).

The alligator skin on my legs is slowly improving, and it's still January! I went over 3 months without getting a haircut and people kept telling me how nice my hair looked after I started using the filter. Someone even asked if I had colored my hair because it looked different than usual. I just got my hair chopped off again on Saturday - this time into a pixie. Regardless, my hair is softer and shiner.

I have mentioned in the past that I have a lot of scalp trouble (I think it's seborrheic dermatitis). Now, I don't know if it is the shower filter or not, but my scalp is in the best condition it has been in a loooooong time. The reason I'm not sure whether it's the filter or not is cuz I have been experiementing with shampoos and skin care products on my scalp during the past couple weeks (so I could actually go get my hair cut and not completely gross out my stylist). I imagine the filter isn't hurting the situation with my scalp!

This is the model I purchased. It comes highly reviewed.  http://www.amazon.com/Rainshowr-Shower-Filter-Massage-Head/dp/B0007DFJII/ref=pd_bxgy_hpc_img_b

Cons (small issues):

If your shower is already short, a filter will make it shorter. Not a problem for me cuz I'm 5'5''. It was a good thing that DH's shower is super tall cuz DH is 6'3''. He was able to add the filter and absorb the lost height cuz the original shower head was up high enough.

Shower filters can be damn ugly. DH got a metal one, and it looks nicer than mine. I am atuned to design. But, when it comes to daily life, I can handle living with less than perfect-looking stuff.

DH did run into some problems with fitting the filter onto the existing shower set up because Kohler has propietary connections that don't fit other products. He had to go to Lowe's to find an adapter. Actually, he's getting a new shower head too. He never loved the Kohler one, so it's an excuse to get one he likes.

We don't have a lot of hard water problems in Chicago, but I do notice that when I travel, my hair is usually a bit of a mess. Dryer and more frizzy. I'll bet that since the hotels don't usually have filters, that's the reason. If I lived some place else, I'd definitely get one for the shower. I'm always so happy to get my "old" hair back when i get home.

Can you just use the filter part and still use your existing shower head?

GreenD- yes - that's what I did with mine. DH is using the head that came with the filter until his new one arrives.
