Thoughts on generosity...
Permalink Closed

I need to take a moment here to thank all of you who were so gracious and generous recently, in regards to a very public request I made here.

I so value my forum relationships with each of you and have for years and am incredibly sorry if that is put at risk.  But, with disappointment and no small bit of shame I must write some form of retraction now.

Whether I was willfully led to believe the situation was dire, or whether the fault is mine for reading it that way, I took action and asked the same of you.  As of today I'm inclined to believe that while our gifts and generosity will be appreciated, they were not as necessary and immediate as I had thought.

To those of you who gave so freely, I'm so incredibly sorry.  Please know that I do believe your gifts will be joyously recieved by the children they were sent to.

To those of you who were considering sending something please know that at this time I remove myself as an intermediary and withdraw my own support.

Should you have questions please don't hesitate to private message me.  I will answer them to the best of my ability and knowledge.

I want you to know that I write this now knowing well that your opinion of me may be changed negatively by this, and I can only hope that you will forgive my mistaken wish to reach out and help where I thought there was a great need.  I apologize for reaching out to this board for help for the family I was trying to assist.  And if any of you feel it due, I'm more than willing to make some sort of financial restitution for what it may have cost you to help them.

I know no details, but it shows considerable character to admit when you've made a mistake.  It makes me think more highly of you

I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of for wanting to help someone else. Some people (like you) feel you have to do much because other people (like me) do little.

Well... being generous can never be a bad thing, and there is nothing your should be forgiven for!

I cannot imagine anyone's opinion of you will be negative because you wanted to help a family have a good holiday. It turns out that maybe the family didn't need your help and it definitely stinks that you spent your time/money only to feel like it was wasted, but I don't think *you* did anything wrong here by trying to reach out and help someone.

The fact that you acted in a generous way and asked for help in delivering generosity only speaks to the kind of person you are. Those that want to give to someone, especially in an environment like this one where we really don't know one another, do so full knowing that we don't know the whole story.

That someone overstated their need reflects poorly on them, not on you.
