making a hair decision

For years I have worn my hair longish.   Finally, about this time last year, I had finally gotten my hair grown out about mid shoulder blade (just above my bra strap).  Then I did something STUPID.  After swearing that I would never go blonde again and certainly never let a "professional" color my hair again, I up and went to a "professional" and let her heavily highlight my hair.  This was August of last year.  Everything was going good and I thought I had finally found someone who knew what she was doing.  Well, when I decided this past March to go back brown, she almost fried my hair off my head.  It was awful.  I had to go to someone else to get the color fixed, but in the process I lost about 5 inches of hair.  This happened in March.  Now it is shoulder length, having grown about 2 inches.  However, I got my split ends trimmed and the person cut about an inch. GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!   Anyway, the hair at my roots that has grown out so healthy looking.  The rest of it is okay, but I can tell a difference.

I have been growing it out, but I have seriously been thinking about getting it cut into a cute, sassy short hair style--like maybe a bob.  I am scared, though, because (can I be gut, level vain and honest here?---I am afraid people won't think I am pretty--there I said it)  That is SO SILLY because three of the prettiest most drop dead gorgeous people in the world to me have short hair:  Ashley Judd , Mariska Hargitay, and Halle Berry.  My thinking there is not even rational.  I have just always had this thing about long hair and I don't know why.  My husband doesn't freak out over the length of my hair --he says it is my hair and I should do what I want because I am the one who has to wear it.  That takes alot of pressure off, but I put pressure on myself.

I would love your suggestions.

These are some I am looking at.

I love the Hally Berry haircut here and I think it would look really good on you! (Have we seen pictures of your face before? I have this image in my head of what I think you look like, but I did a search and can't seem to find a picture of you so maybe I'm making it up?)

I think the one on the actress from Dharma & Greg is a bit 90s, honestly.

I think you probably know this already, but your fears of not looking pretty are totally unfounded! I mean, if you don't think you can FEEL pretty with short hair, then I understand why you might not want to. But if you are just worried about what *other* people might think, I don't think you have to worry about it.

By the way, sorry your hair got butchered! That sucks so bad.

If you were to decide to go short, are you confident that you could find someone to cut and style it to your liking?

How does one fry someone's hair by going dark? Regardless, you might be very surprised at how sexy and pretty you look and feel with short or shorter hair. When I went extremely short for the first time, I felt like my true self emerged for the first time!

btw, in the past I've used Taaz.com to "try on" different hairstyles. I haven't used it in a while but if I remember, it takes like 20 minutes to get ready to go - you have to get the right picture, then you have to outline different features of your face, but after that it's really pretty great at helping you see how different hair will look on you. Just remember to take the picture from a few feet away - when I first did it, I just held my camera out at arm's length and couldn't figure out why my face looked so weird. Turns out, taking pictures that close can distort your face depending on the kind of camera you have.

I think you should go for it. I really like the kind of bobs where the back is shorter and the front is a bit longer. Short hair can be sexy and spunky, so I don't think you have to worry about not being pretty, I am sure you will be just as gorgeous with short hair as you are with long. And, just having more healthy hair on your head will make your hair look better anyway.

It's not at all vain to want to look and feel pretty! EVERYBODY wants this. But what's most important is that you personally feel pretty. If you love having short hair, then rock it! The rest of the world can just keep their opinions to themselves (because you know what they say about opinions and ....)

In any case, if you do decide to get a shorter cut, bring in very specific photos with you of what you want done. I don't know if it's the salons in the area that you live in or that you aren't verbalizing exactly what you want to the stylists, but you have been through enough hair problems to last you a while. What is one woman's version of the Halle Berry bob may not be another's, so have a few photos from different angles of the style you want.

On a side note, I have to agree that the Jenna Elfman cut is very 90's to me. And I just read an article where Katie Holmes confessed that her short hair only looked chic when her stylist blew it out for her. Take the maintenance issue into consideration when you choose a style. A bad day with short hair is harder to hide than with long hair(no ponytail option!) A messy bob like Keira Knightly's might be easier to maintain on a daily basis.

I feel you. I've always wanted very short hair* but every man who's ever loved me has been all about the long hair, from my father to all my boyfriends to my current husband. And I don't even have good hair! But some little critical voice says "don't do it, or nobody will love you anymore."

So if I am not brave enough to do it, I'm not going to tell you what to do. However as I get older (I'm 40 next month) the urge to go shorter and shorter gets stronger.

* I mean like this short, maybe not so much bangs.

I don't know, but she managed to do it.  I think it was when she put bleach on my head to get out the bad color it turned when she put the first dark on it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.  I think I am just going to leave it alone for now since I am so indecisive.

I find myself wanting to try a pixie cut, but I do not have the courage to go that far.  I wish I could just throw caution to the wind and chop it all off.  My husband is very supportive and has always told me that it does not matter to him whether I wear my hair short or long, so I don't know why I make a big issue of it.
