Best veggie burgers?
Permalink Closed

This weekend we're having a cookout, and there will be a few vegetarians there. We want to have veggie burgers for them, but since I'm not a vegetarian I have very little experience with veggie burgers and have no idea which ones taste good. Can anyone here reccomend a good one (or one that is crap and I should stay away from)?

I dislike the original Boca patties. But, I love the MorningStar Farms blackbean burger and mushroom burger. I also like GardenBurger and MorningStar Farms original style. The chipotle ones by MSF are good, but too distinct and limit the types of burger topping I can enjoy.

Just as an FYI, your vegetarian friends will be super happy with you if you use a special part of the grill that has been cleaned and is a small distance from the meat. And, please remember to use a seperate flipper and put them on a seperate plate.

Handsdown, my favorite (and my hubbie's fave) are patties by Sunshine Burgers. They're so good, that I looked for a recipe that was inspired by them and made it last spring. They're not soy-based. They taste great with ketchup and greens (salad or lettuce on top of sandwich), and they're gluten-free.

We usually get the original and the garden herb varieties, but I have heard others really like the southwest and bbq ones too.

You'll def have to cook them on foil, as they are relatively delicate.

Have fun!

I'm not a vegetarian, but I eat veggie burgers a few times a month. I like the Boca burgers, but I know that a lot of vegetarians don't (they were the first ones I ever tried so that might be why I enjoy them.) Boca burgers don't hold up well on a grill however (I usually make mine on a George Foreman indoors.) I also really enjoy the Morgingstar Mushroom Burgers, which do grill nicely over low heat.

My advice is that no matter what brand you choose, watch the burgers carefully on the grill. They cook much quicker than meat burgers and dry out quickly.

You might have already gone to the grocery store, but what about portabello mushrooms instead of veggie burgers?

I've been a vegetarian for almost 8 years, and my favorite used to be Morningstar black bean burgers.

In recent weeks, I've discovered Morningstar Grillers 1/4lb burgers and I highly recommend those. I agree with greendiamond about using a separate part of the grill and separate utensils.

Hope that helps!!

Thanks everybody! I hadn't gone to the store yet - waiting for more people to rsvp so I had a better idea of head count. But I'm heading out to the store now, with a list of all your faves!

(P.S. Definitely going to use different utensils and a different part of the grill - I would never have thought of that on my own. Thanks for the tip!)
