So, not sure if you all remember that DH was offered a job last fall with a company in North Carolina. He turned it down because I had just gotten my (what turned out to be awful) job. Well, the company is back, knocking on his door, this time for either Sacramento and if that doesn't work, Atlanta.

We will definitely take it this time (I'll stay put where I am until January and he'll move before me, most likely). Another plus to my current job (it's an indefinite/long-term contract, so I'm not locked in forever like a permanent job). 

They were trying to get DH into the LA area first (or San Diego or SF), but the only current opening in CA is Sacramento. The other, as mentioned already, is Atlanta.

I know nothing about Sacramento, but I'm thinking he should just take the CA job to get us out to CA and then he can put in for a transfer when one opens. Can anyone talk to me about Sacramento?

GO FOR IT. Start by getting your foot in the door. Living in CA will definitely help with interviewing for positions in cities you'd rather be in. Seems pretty central to me, and actually kind of a cool place. I've only ever driven through, though. Only down-side appears to be flooding, but if the prospect of earthquakes doesn't bother you, then flooding is nothing ;)

D has a great point about being in the state to make it easier to get jobs in/around LA when the time comes (nothing worse than finding the perfect job only to see that pesky "local candidates only" disclaimer).

IMO, Sacramento is just like any other city; it has its bad areas and good areas.

Midtown is where all the cool kids hang out at. There are many restaurants that stay open late; however, the city does die off after 10:00 pm. I can't tell you how many times we want to eat somewhere and the restaurant is closed.

Lake Tahoe is about an hour and a half drive, and so is San Francisco, so if you're free on the weekends, better to go there than stay in town if you're looking for action.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the flooding or earthquake; just be aware that it can happen. :)

Good luck with the move! You gotta start somewhere in California, right? It could definitely be worst. :)!

I love Sacramento. I lived there as a child for a few years when my parents went to the State U there (the last time Jerry Brown was governor) but have been back only a few times for visiting elected officials, conferences, etc. It's a mini DC, a company town in which the company is politics. Definitely more conservative than SF or LA.

The only warning I have is that because it's lush and verdant and the climate is nice, it is ground zero for allergy sufferers. If you have allergies you will be miserable a lot of the time. However that's also a good justification for a transfer later on - can't handle the seasonal allergies!

Thanks, everyone! Sacramento isn't a sure thing yet, and it still might end up being Atlanta. We won't be given a choice between the two- one of them will be offered, the other won't. But I'm hoping it's Sacramento.

Thanks for the heads up about allergies. I have them, but I live in Central Pa right now and have lived in Philly, both of which rank pretty high on the worst places for allergies list, so what's another few years in an allergy riddled CA city?
