So I took my first ever excerise class yesterday (I usually work out on a treadmill and with hand weights at home.) I felt so uncorrodinated and unsure of what I was doing most of the class. Does it get easier to follow? I'm not the most gracefull person (understatement of the century here.)
Also, I'm not feel sore today and that seems strange to me. My arms and core feel, well I guess worked or strained might describe it, but definately not sore. Should I up the amount of weight on my hand weights and weight bar in class to get a better workout? I'm used to doing a lot of reps and sets, but the teacher seems to go from one type of move to another pretty quickly. She did have us stretch after class and I never remember to do that at home, so maybe that accounts for the lack of soreness?
I just not sure if my expectations of this class (learning new moves and getting toned) are realistic. I'm hoping somebody who's taken more classes than my whole ONE might shead some light.
It may be that your weights are too light. But, sometimes soreness takes an extra day to set in. And, since this is a bit different from other exercise you have done, give it a day and see. I would argue that if you feel like you could have done a ton more reps, then you need to up the weight.
You may need a few different weights at your station for different movements. And, the stretching will help with the soreness.
It does get easier to follow for most people. In my experience, group fitness instructors often have combinations that they mix up into different routines. So, if you get to know a combination, even if what follows it is different, you will soon be jumping from one known combo to another. Of course, some people just don't memorize these things naturally, but it seems like most do. You aren't standing out near as much as you may think you are.
Thanks GD. I upped the weights this past Wednesday and it made the difference. I could really feel like I worked the muscles after class (and they were a bit sore yesterday.) I felt a lot less awkward this past class too.
