Okay, so my responsibilities here in the past few weeks have far exceeded receptionist, office manager or administrative assistant. I'm actually talking and working with clients and brokers throughout the entire enrollment and fulfillment process. The person who had this position before me never did half of the stuff that I do. It's coming up on my transition from temp to perm and I really think that I should be either a) getting paid more or b) getting paid more and moved to a cubicle and they should hire a receptionist so that I can stop being harassed with menial tasks that I don't have time for anymore (this is the better option imo).
How do I bring this up? Both more money and promotion possibilities? I feel like I'm being robbed by being called the receptionist when I have so much more responsibility and I also am sick of being bogged down with menial crap when I have actual, real work to do. I most definitely deserve a pay increase as well. Help please!! Thanks.
IMO call a meeting with your supervisor/boss/PIC and tell them just what you told us - That your responsibilities (and capabilities) far exceed those implied by your title, and you feel that the best use of your time is not answering phones but attending to the more involved projects in which you have become a part of. If they agree and give you a promotion, I would hold out for at least a couple more dollars per hour above what you're getting now as a temp. They need to know that they could easily lose you, and that it's in their best interest to make it worth your while to drive 1.5 hours each way to come there everyday.
Good luck!

this is good news, though, right? i mean, wasn't part of your problem with your job that they wouldn't give you anything interesting to do even though you asked? so now they are giving you responsibilities--yay!
anyway, on your question, i agree with lmonet. just show that you are ambitious, say that you are really appreciating the new challenges you have been given, learning so much blah de blah blah and that you would like to grow with the company as xyz position (whatever the title is that you want). if it's a convo about a temp-to-perm transition, money is going to come up naturally anyway. did you get sent there through a recruiting agency? you could always call up whoever the headhunter is and have them put in your request for whatever amount of money you want to be making in advance of the meeting, but honestly i think it would be totally normal for you to just bring it up in the meeting yourself as well.
I wouldn't wait until the meeting - it couldn't hurt to start sounding out people who might support you now. And, of course, dropping hints about how much more work you're doing than the last person did is key. You need a kind of low-level "Nylabelle does so much around here..." buzz going. It's all about image management... Good luck!
Thanks, ladies. I already know that once I go perm, I'll go from hourly to salaried with an automatic pay increase. However, I believe that I deserve more b/c I'm doing more work and I'm capable of more work. Thanks for your advice...I'll keep you posted. Any other thoughts are appreciated.
