Jewelry appraisal?
Permalink Closed

So, I need to get insurance for my wedding and engagement rings and I've heard that you should get them appraised before you get insurance because appraisal value is higher than what you paid for it. Is this true? If so, where can I go to get it appraised? I'd feel weird going to the store where I bought it, but maybe that's standard operating procedure and I don't know it.

You can most certainly get it from the store you bought it from. Just tell them you need an appraisal for insurance purposes. They will charge you for this service. Appraisals are typically for replacement and reflective of full retail price. As for the appraisal being higher than what you bought it for, it's possible - depends on how much of a deal you haggled when you bought it.

We got the appraisal from the broker my fiance bought my ring from and it appraised for much higher than he paid.  You should definitely go back to where you got it from and ask for an appraisal.  I did not have to pay for it, but he also got my ring from a diamond broker.

We had my rings custom-made by a local jeweler, not a broker. They did have the blue diamond sent in maybe from a broker, but I'm not sure. We also got a no-charge upgrade from palladium (part of the platinum family, but not quite as strong) to platinum because the setting of my ring was better (and stronger) in platinum. Since we had initially ordered palladium and that's what they charged us for,so I know the rings are going to appraise for higher than what we paid. Sounds like a good place to start is with my local jeweler, though. Thanks!
