Random Q about blogs
Permalink Closed

Is there any way of knowing whether a blog has been updated other than by going to the address?

I regularly read approx 20 blogs and I'm tired of clicking into them on a daily basis only to see the SAME OLD POST for 2 weeks.  Is there any solution that you guys know of?

Yes! An RSS reader! Anytime a blog is updated the post will automatically show up in your reader. Basically, you just open up your reader and scroll down the page and all your favorite blogs' entries will appear. It is the greatest.

I use Google Reader - it's free, easy, and from what I remember you are just automatically signed up for it anyway if you have a gmail account. Go to google.com/reader and sign in with your google/gmail account. On the top of the left-hand column, you'll see a button called "Add a Subscription." Click that, then enter a blog address (e.g. http://www.blogname.blogspot.com or http://www.blogname.com). BAM! It's in your reader.

Most blogs will automatically work like that. Sometimes, you will see an error message that says "no feed available for this site" or something like that. If that happens, go to the blog and look for something that says "RSS feed" or "Atom." Then take THAT link and add that as a subscription (e.g., http://feed.feedburner.com/blogname" but it could really be anything)

Also, once you sign up for reader, you can also follow blogspot blogs pretty easily. A lot of blogspot/blogger blogs will have something in the margins that says "Followers" or "Google Friend Connect" - click the "Follow" button and it will automatically be added to your Google Reader.

HTH!

I don't have a reply of my own, but I did some research.

Do you think any of these would work?
Note how many of the comments mention Google Reader

This guy explains a few ways to manage your intake of news and blog posts. He mentions a few other options other than Google Reader (but Google Reader is his fave).

Another guy wrote about some other strategies, and from his ideas I became interested in Remember the Milk.  It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it is very cool.  I just had 2 instances occur this week in which RTM would have been very helpful!

LOL - 10 seconds after Kelly!

I use Google Reader for pretty much any blog or website I want to stay updated on without having to visit them regularly. It has features that allow you to categorize and group, plus it's connected to my other Google accounts, so it's just convenient.

Ditto.  Google Reader is really easy to use and get set up.  It sounds like it's exactly what you're looking for.

OMG you guys are fab. Seriously, any time I ever have a question, I always find an answer here. I set up Google Reader and it rocks, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
