Has anyone come across an effective way to store lettuce? DH just brought home heads of red and green leaf lettuce with no bags. These are surely to take a dive soon if we don't eat them tonight. Any suggestions?
I put them in zip lock baggies, seal the baggie except for a little section in the center of the zip, then I suck the air out of the baggie to vacuum seal it. Yes, you get your lips on the baggie, but you kiss your husband with the same lips so it shouldn't matter
the browning is rust caused by oxidation, so by eliminating the air, you will retard the browning and wilting.

I'm not as fancy as D. I shove a paper towel in the bag to collect the moisture, and leave the bag a little open so it doesn't get all soggy and gross. Then, I hope for the best.
I've heard good things about those as-seen-on-tv bags to prolong the life of produce, but I ahven't tried them.
Head lettuce I keep in one of the green bags. They last a while - two weeks? I use romaine in my smoothies most of the time so I don't go through it fast.
Loose-leaf/baby lettuces...we go through them pretty quickly. If we don't, I do the same paper towel thing. Sogginess is the enemy. The sprout lady at my farmer's market says to change the paper towel every day (rotate between two).

I wondered if those green bags really worked. Do they work well with other fruit and vegetables too? My strawberries go bad so quickly (like maybe 2 or 3 days at the most.)
They work(ish). Things have to be very, very dry - tough because most supermarkets are spraying the produce all day long. For ten bucks it's worth trying. I have found they don't work as well as I'd like for tomatoes and citrus.
