Hello. Do you think it is okay to email managers/supervisors and request that they serve as a reference for you for a job search? I think a phone call is more personal, but I don't want to put people on the spot. Some of the people I am thinking of asking work at different campuses around the city. Thank you.
I don't think there is anything wrong with emailing someone to ask if they'll be a reference for you. As long as asking for references inside your current organization won't jeopardize your job now, email away!

I'd rather not get interrupted by a phone call for something like that. I would absolutely do it by email AND it gives you the chance to refresh their memory about the projects you worked on together or the timeframe or whatever else you might want them to mention.
Lately I get these requests through LinkedIn mail versus office email.
I agree with the others, and I agree on the LinkedIn angle too. I've never asked for a reference on linkedin, but if I have a former client or coworker in mind that I want to use as a reference, I'll pop them a note asking how they're doing, what I'm up to including the job prospect, then mention that I was thinking of using them as a reference and if that's ok.
