I have the bad habit of using food as a psychological thing - I tend to want to eat when I'm bored, stressed, tired.... I've improved a lot simply by making myself stop and think about whether I'm hungry, but there are still times when it's hard to resist. I try to exercise and do other relaxing things when I'm stressed. But what I'm looking for is a quick way to destress/ distract myself. Do you have any ideas?
ugh, I do the same thing and I have tried everything to no avail. What I find works best is to make myself a cup of tea- that way it's not food, but it's food-like. and much healthier to eating random snacks all the time.
Eat a tiny portion of whatever it is you want to eat and then throw one of those Listerine Clear Strips in your mouth. Nothing says to your body that you are done eating like those things.
Personally, when I am bored, I will eat every single thing in the house and then go to Carvel and get a huge ice cream. I don't even try. I'm horrible.
talk on the phone, clean the house, take a nap, go for a walk, give yourself a manicure/pedicure.... and i second the gum and tea suggestions, those are always good alternatives to mindless snacking
The same thing happens to me when I'm bored.....I head to the kitchen. I find that brushing my teeth helps. I won't want to eat anything after my teeth are nice and clean, at least not for 2 hours or so (and, along the lines of the gum/listerine strips, food does not mix with minty breath!) and by then the urge to snack has passed....hth!
I do the same thing. And since I have a ton of time on my hands right now, I've been traveling for my snacks - I'll go to the chinese restaurant for noodles, then stop at the icecream store, then the grocery store for snacks while I watch a movie... Anyway, to distract myself whenever I feel like a snack run, I like to read a book, or a magazine. It absorbs you enough that you forget about other things, without being taxing, or getting dirty, like exercise (which is my #1 stress releiver, but not always practical) Plus, it's portable, so I can go read in the park instead of getting an icecream to eat in the park.
