I am moving into my college apt in a couple of weeks and my roommates and I really wanted to get slipcovers for our ugly brown/tan checkered couches. Our living room colors are lime green and aqua (with diff shades of blues and greens too) and we really wanted cream/off-white slilpcovers. The only problem is that they are so expensive everywhere! I was thinking of getting a huge sheet in the color i want and maybe putting it on top of the sofa and pinning it down somehow? I am not really sure what to do. Any suggestions?
Try Target. About a month ago, they had some at 40% off. Even regular price they are not too expensive. If you can get a good deal on them, I have heard SureFit has good slipcovers too.
When I was in college my roommates and I used giant sheets since slipcovers were so expensive. It was kind of annoying to get them to stay in place. I think we pinned some spots and then got long wooden dowels and shoved them behind the couch cushions in order to prevent the sheets from getting pulled out. I would say try Target or ebay (maybe Overstock and SmartBargains too?) and if you can't find a good deal then try using sheets.
Slipcovers can be a serious pain in the ass. cc's suggestion of dowel rods is a good one. I used rolled up magazines which worked good too. If it isn't an absolute necessity, I may say skip it. Just because mine frustrated me...constantly retucking and straitening... If you got fabric or a sheet you could always staple it to the couch and cover the individual cushions. More work though...
